The 79 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1966
A note about the credits
Who sang the song Nainoñ waali ne hayé mera dil loota in the film Mera Saaya? A usually reliable website said: Asha Bhosle. Prof. Bhargava listed ‘Lata, Sadhana and Sunil Dutt’ among the voices. Therefore, the arbitration of SaReGaMa was sought, and it supported Prof. Bhargava, listing Lata Mangeshkar as the singer.
The next rung
The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list nineteen songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of eleven runners-up. The two lists have three songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 27 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’
GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.
AB: Bhargava, Anil, Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar (Hindi; 2007; Rs.1,200), Vangmaya Prakashan, Jaipur-302015. vangmaya_jpr@yahoo.com)
Raags in songs
Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
Reshma Hingorani/ indian classical music writes about Tumheiñ yaad karte karte ( Amrapali / Shankar-Jaikishan/ Shailendra/ Lata Mangeshkar) ‘I think SJ had Bhimpalasi in their mind while composing this tune, but they ended up using too much Komal Dha, and even komal Re to make this tune more contemporary. They ended up making a nice tune but made the raag "Dooshit" in the proccess. I would not recommend this song for Bhimplasi ‘
What raag(s) do we find in the song Koi sagar dil ko bahlata nahin from the film Dil Diya Dard Liya. Some musicologists consulted say Raag Kalãvati; Chandrakantha.com writes Raag Janasamohani.
According to Ashwani Kumar Jaao Re Jogi Tum Jaao Re from Amrapali was based on Raag Hamvir Kalyani.
Rahul Dev Burman had composed Kajre Badarwa (Anand Bakshi/ Lata Mangeshkar/ Raag Piloo) for another film. However, filmmaker-actor Mehmmod liked it so much that he got it included in Pati Patni.-Its haunting prelude uses the flute and santoor.
