Grenades

2021

Shishir Arya, August 25, 2021: The Times of India

The first batch of one lakh multi-mode hand grenades — the country’s first ever fully indigenous ammunition made by a private company — was handed over to the Army by defence minister Rajnath Singh.

The multimode grenade, manufactured by Nagpurbased Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL), is set to replace the M36, a World War II design grenade made at the Ordnance Factory. The project, which was commenced in 1989, faced several technical challenges, especially maintaining the perfect timing for the grenade’s delay mechanism. The grenade explodes four seconds after the pin is taken out. Achieving this timing was the greatest challenge, said sources. EEL in October last year was awarded a contract to make 10 lakh grenades over a period of two years. “We expect to finish the order in 15 months,” said EEL chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal.

EEL is a 100% subsidiary of Solar Industries, a citybased company. EEL has also signed a MoU for supply of the grenades to Indonesia.
