Birds

2019/ 90 species/ 20,400 birds spotted

Nov 13, 2019: The Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: Volunteers of NGO Neerthadakam in association with Wings Bird Watching Club organized a bird watching session for students on the occasion of the National Bird Watching Day which was observed on Tuesday. As many 32 students of Government Higher Secondary School for Girls, Venganoor took part in the event which was held at three different spots at Punchakkari near Vellayani.

The objective of the programme was to count the number of bird sightings in the region and the students who were divided into three groups were asked to note down the number of birds they spot.

According to founder and director of Neerthadakam Kiran A J, an impressive total of 20,400 birds were counted by the students during the session that lasted for two-and-a-half hours. “Usually, bird watching sessions just include the usual observing of birds through binoculars and cameras but we wanted the students to actually get more info from the session. So we taught them how to identify birds and count them in such a way that repetitions can be avoided. Around 90 species of birds were found in the session, including rare species. While there is a general increase in the total number of birds, we observed a decrease in the number of some migratory birds,” Kiran said.

Wings bird watching club coordinators Aswin B Raj and Rakesh A S and Venganoor Girls HSS teachers Annie Jolly J P and Bindu A R led the bird watching session.
