Milk, egg, meat, wool output increased in 2022-23: Govt data Bloomberg

''' UP Now Ahead Of Rajasthan As Top Milk Producer '''

New Delhi : Production of milk, egg, meat and wool increased in the country during 2022-23 over the previous financial year, but output of eggs and meat has registered higher growth compared with milk and wool in the year over 2021-22, shows the latest ‘basic animal husbandry statistics’ that factored in the output survey held during the March 2022-February 2023 period.

The milk output data show Uttar Pradesh has replaced Rajasthan as the top milk producer in 2022-23. UP is the highest producer of both milk and meat. Though UP has traditionally been the highest milk producer, Rajasthan had occupied the top position in 2021-22. The state had, however, reported the highest number of deaths of cattle due to lumpy skin diseases (LSD) in 2022, resulting in losing the top spot in the list.

The LSD was also responsible for the overall lowest growth rate of milk output in the country in the past five years. The production of milk increased by 3.8% during 2022-23 over its output in 2021-22. But in the past, its annual growth rates were 6.5% in 2018-19; 5.7% in 2019-20; 5.8% in 2020-21 and 5.8% in 2021-22.

Data show that the milk yield of exotic/crossbred cows reported 8.5 kgs per cow per day whereas indigenous/non-descript cows reported a yield of 3.4 kgs per cow per day during the year 2022-23. Interestingly, the average yield rate (kg per day per animal) of both exotic/crossbred and non-descript/Indigenous cattle has consistently been increasing since 2016-17 with Punjab taking the lead in both categories.

There has been a steady increase in per capita availability of meat. The per capita availability was increased from 5.7 kg per annum during 2016-17 to 7.1 kg per annum in 2022-23. The production of meat was increased by 5.1% in 2022-23 over 2021-22.
