=Baruipur=&lt;br /&gt;

Town in the head-quarters subdivision of the District &lt;br /&gt;
of the Twenty-four Parganas, Bengal, situated in 22° 21' N. and &lt;br /&gt;
88° 27'E., on the banks of the Adi Ganga (original bed of the Ganges), &lt;br /&gt;
15 miles south of Calcutta. Population (1901), 4,217. The town was &lt;br /&gt;
formerly the head-quarters of a subdivision of the same name, which &lt;br /&gt;
was amalgamated with the Alipore subdivision in 1883. Baruipur &lt;br /&gt;
derives its name from the extensive cultivation of f&amp;gt;dn {Piper Betle) by &lt;br /&gt;
the Barui caste. The town is a mission station of the Society for the &lt;br /&gt;
Propagation of the Gospel, and contains a large church. Baruipur was &lt;br /&gt;
constituted a municipality in 1869. The income during the decade &lt;br /&gt;
ending 1901-2 averaged Rs. 4,700, and the expenditure Rs. 4,500. In &lt;br /&gt;
1903-4 the income was Rs. 6,900, including Rs. 3,000 derived from a &lt;br /&gt;
