=Calimere, Point=&lt;br /&gt;
(the Calligicum of Ptolemy) A low promontory &lt;br /&gt;
in the Tirutturaippundi taluk of Tanjore District, Madras, situated in &lt;br /&gt;
10° iS' N. and 79° 51' E., 40 miles from Point Pedrcj in Ceylon. A &lt;br /&gt;
lighthouse was erected on it in 1902. Inland stretches a ' reserved ' forest &lt;br /&gt;
extending over 6^ square miles, where antelope, spotted deer, and wild &lt;br /&gt;
hog are to be met with. Ponies are bred in the neighbourhood in &lt;br /&gt;
small numbers, and tobacco is largely grown. To bathe in the sea at &lt;br /&gt;
Point Calimere is considered sacred by the Hindus, and the place has &lt;br /&gt;
a temple which is an object of pilgrimage. The promontory was &lt;br /&gt;
once used as a sanitarium, but it is now said to be malarious from &lt;br /&gt;
