		+	Pranati Nayak won the bronze medal in the vault final of the FIG World Cup in Antalya, Turkey on Saturday. The gymnast, who represented India at Tokyo Olympics, finished third behind gold medallist Jayla Hang and silver medallist Claire Pease, both from the US.

		+	Pranati earned an aggregate score of 13.417 which was enough for her first international medal of the year. While her first vault — a Tsukahara 720 Twist with fixed landing — helped her score 13.600 points, she was awarded 12.834 points for her second vault — Handspring Tuck Salto with full twist, fixed landing.

		+	Speaking on her performance, coach Ashok Mishra was expectedly ecstatic. “She did superb vaulting today (Saturday). What’s great is that she improved on her qualifying score of 13.317. The competition was tough but she managed to win a medal.”

		+	“I also want her to earn a direct qualification to the World Championships which will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, in October,” said the coach who trains Pranati at Gymnastics High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar.

		+	To make sure she is able to do that, Nayak will not only have to work on her technique but also her physical fitness and increase her leg strength, which she herself admitted in a recent interview has gone down in the recent months. This bronze will surely give her the motivation to put in that extra effort, because her main target is doing well at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year.

Ashish, who won India’s first-ever gymnastics medals at the 2010 Delhi CWG, claimed on Wednesday that he had competed at the 2006 Melbourne CWG and 2009 World Championships without the mandatory ‘FIG licence’ – an identification card issued by the sport’s world governing body, FIG, to all gymnasts in order to participate in international competitions.

		+	Ashish’s revelation has come in the light of the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) and Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) recent claims that Mohammad Bobby and Gaurav Kumar were denied a spot in the gymnastics contingent because they didn’t possess a valid FIG licence.

		+	Ashish’s revelation seems to have called their bluff as the Allahabadborn gymnast further revealed that if the federation (GFI) is willing, processing of licence doesn’t necessarily take a month. “I got it in a few days. Don’t exactly know the technicalities but it all depends on the federation. If they really want, they can always get it done (from the FIG) early,” Ashish told TOI.
