		+	Mumbai : Over the years, the Indian Institutes of Technology have been quietly reshaping courses. Five-year integrated programmes, once seen as a pragmatic option for those who could not make the cut for a BTech course but were keen on imbibing the rigour of an IIT through an accelerated masters course, are steadily being phased out. Increasingly, even as the five-year courses are being stopped, the doorway to a masters opens not at the start but midway after the fifth semester now.  At some campuses, the intake in the 5-year courses is being folded into the expanding sprawl of the BTech programme. Student numbers are surging, partly as a result of widening reservation norms. At other institutes, administrators say, the programme is being repackaged in “a new avatar” to make them interdisciplinary. Unlike a traditional five-year course—where a student deepens their roots within a single discipline — this is a dual degree that is more layered. It allows a student to walk between two worlds: a Bachelor’s in one field, and a Master’s in another. Mechanical engineering and robotics. Physics and data science.

		+	The old Indian Institutes of Technology in the city, Delhi, Chennai and Kanpur have the best gender ratio among all the IIT campuses. This year, 3,480 girls joined various IITs, with 15 girls getting in through the gender-neutral pool of seats, reports Hemali Chhapia.

		+	Of the 17,695 students admitted to the 23 IITs, women make up 19.75%. Last year, of the 17,340 admits given out by the IITs, 3,359 were handed out to girls. This year, 42,947 women candidates registered for JEE (Advanced) 2024. Of them, 7,964 candidates made the cut. The southern zone has a disproportionately large share of women. Their journey begins early. Not only have as many bagged a seat, but the proportion of girls — about 15,000 — who register from the southern zone is almost a third of all women aspirants. This zone comprises Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. Close to 2,600 from this zone qualified after the entrance exams to join the IITs.

		+	Mumbai : Newcomers to the elite technological club of the country seem to have made a clear choice: 72 of the top 100 JEE (Advanced) rankers have selected the IIT Bombay campus. Another 23 chose IIT Delhi, and two picked IIT Madras.

		+	The clamour for computer science at IIT-B among the cream of the lot went up a notch to touch a perfect 10 — all the top 10 all-India rankers in JEE are joining the Powai campus. 		+	Mumbai : Multiple schools at various IITs have recorded their lowest candidate applications for the doctoral programmes. The downward trajectory of interest in the PhD started in 2021, but is most pronounced now, worrying academicians across India’s best STEM colleges, who say the trend is becoming an established one.

		+	The Covid years disrupted education and its effects were felt after it too for a year. However, the PhD application numbers don’t seem to be picking up at the IITs and the IISc, as observed in a working paper put together by a senior professor of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
		+	“This downward trend of interest in a PhD is coming at a time when these institutions have record faculty strengths and research fund ing and the demand on their intellectual resources is on the increase,” said IIT-B professor D Manjunath in his paper titled ‘Engineering PhDs in Premier Institutions: What’s the Slope?’, which has been circulating widely in academic circles.
