		+	Mumbai/New Delhi : The Indian Institutes of Technology continue to anchor the country’s global reputation in engineering, placing multiple disciplines firmly within the world’s top 50 QS rankings by subjects.

		+	Close behind, management education is carving out its own space, with institutions such as IIM Ahmedabad pushing into elite global ranks and signalling India’s growing influence in business and strategy education. However, arts and humanities present a more complex picture, an area where progress has been slower, and in some cases, reversed.

		+	The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 released Wednesday placed IIT Bombay’s Computer Science (44), Electrical Engineering (44) and Civil Engineering (42) among the world’s leading technical institutions. IIT Delhi records an equally strong showing, with Electrical Engineering at 36, Mechanical Engineering at 44 and Chemical Engineering entering the top 50 for the first time at 48.
		+	IIT Madras, meanwhile, posts four top-50 finishes, led by Petroleum Engineering (29), along with strong returns to the top tier in Civil and Mechanical disciplines.

		+	Across the country, nearly 100 institutions now feature in the rankings, marking a 120% increase in five years. More significant is the quality shift: 44% of India’s entries improved their positions this year, the highest proportion among major higher education systems globally.
		+	Jessica Turner, CEO, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, said: “India’s rise this year is not just about scale: it’s about momentum in quality and global competitiveness. The breadth of improvement across engineering, technology and business signals a system that is accelerating with intent.”
		+	The gains are most visible in engineering. Chemical Engineering alone now has five Indian institutions in the global top 100, up from two. Electrical and Mechanical engineering each have six. Civil engineering has five. In Mineral and Mining Engineering, four institutions sit in the top 50.

		+	Computer science, once a thinner area of representation, has expanded rapidly. Ten Indian institutions now feature in the top 200, with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi leading at 44 and 45 respectively—their highest-ever ranks.

		+	Moreover, IIT Kharagpur has entered Petroleum Engineering at 28 on debut and climbed sharply in Mineral and Mining Engineering. Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani has moved into the global top 50 in Pharmacy and Pharmacology. Vellore Institute of Technology has broken into the top 100 in Electrical Engineering for the first time.

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad has climbed to 21 in Business and Management Studies and made a debut at the same rank in Marketing, the first time an Indian institution has been ranked in that discipline. 		+	New Delhi : Some of Delhi’s leading institutions, including Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University, have featured in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

		+	The rankings, published by London-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds, mark the 16th annual subject-wise assessment of universities worldwide, offering a detailed snapshot of how institutions perform across specific disciplines.
		+
		+	IIT-D is the only institute in the capital to make the top 50 in any subject, with 36th rank in engineering and technology. However, the overall rank in engineering and technology has slipped from 26 the previous year.

		+	Despite the drop, it continues to hold a strong position among global engineering institutions, underlining its continued academic and research strength. Stream-wise, in the 2026 rankings, Electrical Engineering secured the highest rank, i.e., 36, followed by Mechanical Engineering (44), Computer Science (45), Chemical Engineering (48) and Civil Engineering (50). All five subjects have significantly improved their 2026 rankings since last year.

		+	In Arts and Humanities, both DU and JNU saw significant drops compared to last year. DU fell to 231 in 2026 from 160 in 2025 while JNU moved to 260 from 177. The decline suggests increasing global competition in disciplines traditionally considered strongholds for these institutions, even as they continue to remain within the global ranking framework.

		+	Natural Sciences brought a more encouraging trend for IIT-D, which climbed to 91 from 146, marking one of the most notable improvements among Delhi institutions. DU also saw a marginal improvement, moving to 270 from 275.

		+	Jamia Millia Islamia entered the 501–550 band while JNU remained unchanged within the same range, reflecting stability but limited upward movement.

		+	In Life Sciences and Medicine, AIIMS Delhi showed improvement, rising to 217 from 226, indicating steady progress in medical research and education. DU, however, slipped to 399 from 362, pointing to uneven performance across institutions in this category.

		+	In Social Sciences and Management, IIT-D ranked 84, slightly down from 75, while DU dropped to 177 from 137. JNU also saw a decline, from 258 to 317, continuing the broader trend of downward shifts in social science disciplines among Delhi-based universities.

		+	The rankings, which evaluate over 21,000 academic programmes across 1,900 universities in more than 100 countries, highlight the scale and competitiveness of global higher education.

		+	Notably, India as a whole recorded 27 top-50 positions this year, more than double the 12 achieved in 2024, spread across 12 institutions, signalling a broader national rise even as individual institutions navigate fluctuations.

Of the Indian institutions ranked last year, 36 improved, 16 remained stable, and 105 declined — even as 137 universities made their debut, the highest-ever number from India. -The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai has achieved its highest rank ever, breaking into the world’s top 150 universities in the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking. This marks the first time in eight years that an Indian higher education institution has made it to the top 150 list, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore previously achieving this feat in 2016 with a ranking of 147.

-IIT Bombay has made a remarkable leap, climbing 23 positions to secure the 149th rank globally in this year’s edition of the rankings. However, the list has also seen significant fluctuations, with IISc falling 70 positions from 155th rank to 225. It now stands as the third-highest ranked Indian institution, compared to being the best Indian institution last year. Similarly, IIT Delhi fell from 174 to 197, IIT Kanpur from 264 to 278 and IIT Madras from 250 to 285, among others.

-The UK-based ranking agency, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, has partly attributed the fluctuation to a revision of the assessment parameters this year. It introduced three new indicators — sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network, each carrying a weightage of 5 per cent.

The weightage given to the academic reputation indicator has been lowered from 40 per cent to 30 per cent. Similarly, the emphasis on faculty student ratio has also been decreased from 15% to 10% and the significance attributed to the employer reputation indicator has been increased from 10% to 15%.

-The reduction in emphasis on the faculty-student ratio (FSR) has had a negative impact on institutions such as IISC which is primarily a research-focused institution with lower teaching load compared to the IITs. IISc had been performing well on the FSR indicator. Due to the decreased weightage, its ranking has been affected. However, according to a QS spokesperson this is not the only factor that led to IISc’s fall in rankings.

		+	The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai has achieved its highest rank ever, breaking into the world’s top 150 universities in the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking. This marks the first time in eight years that an Indian higher education institution has made it to the top 150 list, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore previously achieving this feat in 2016 with a ranking of 147.

		+	IIT Bombay has made a remarkable leap, climbing 23 positions to secure the 149th rank globally in this year’s edition of the rankings. However, the list has also seen significant fluctuations, with IISc falling 70 positions from 155th rank to 225. It now stands as the third-highest ranked Indian institution, compared to being the best Indian institution last year. Similarly, IIT Delhi fell from 174 to 197, IIT Kanpur from 264 to 278 and IIT Madras from 250 to 285, among others.

		+	The UK-based ranking agency, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, has partly attributed the fluctuation to a revision of the assessment parameters this year. It introduced three new indicators — sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research network, each carrying a weightage of 5 per cent.

		+	To accommodate the three new indicators, QS made adjustments to the importance assigned to other parameters. The weightage given to the academic reputation indicator has been lowered from 40 per cent to 30 per cent. Similarly, the emphasis on faculty student ratio has also been decreased from 15% to 10% and the significance attributed to the employer reputation indicator has been increased from 10% to 15%.

		+	The reduction in emphasis on the faculty-student ratio (FSR) has had a negative impact on institutions such as IISC which is primarily a research-focused institution with lower teaching load compared to the IITs. IISc had been performing well on the FSR indicator. Due to the decreased weightage, its ranking has been affected. However, according to a QS spokesperson this is not the only factor that led to IISc’s fall in rankings.

		+	“IISc has seen drops in several indicators this year in addition to faculty student ratio, and particularly those that focus on global engagement (international students’ ratio, international faculty ratio, international research network). There has also been a drop in citations per faculty and in employer reputation,” the spokesperson told this newspaper.

		+	Among the parameters, IIT Bombay has demonstrated excellence in employment reputation and citation per faculty. Notably, there has been a remarkable improvement in citation per faculty, with the score rising from 55.1 last year to an impressive 73.1 this year.

		+	Over the past five years, it has improved its employer reputation ranking from 102nd to 69th position and its citations per faculty rank from 226th to 133rd.

		+	According to Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director, IIT Bombay, the research productivity of the institute received a boost during the pandemic lockdown, resulting in numerous research papers published in high-impact journals that are now being cited, contributing to the improved ranking.

		+	“IIT Bombay produced 15,905 academic papers from 2018 to 2022, generating 143,800 citations. It has recorded a research growth of some 17% over this period. For average citations per faculty, they sit at nearly four times the global median – an impressive feat by any standard… Its research output is split fairly evenly between Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences. Its highly collaborative work across Astrophysics has generated particular interest, according to citations generated,” Andrew Mac Farlane, QS’ senior research manager, told The Indian Express.
