North-western subdivision of Cuttack Dis- &lt;br /&gt;
trict, Bengal, lying between 20 39' and 21 10' N. and 85 42' and &lt;br /&gt;
86° 37' E., with an area of 1,115 square miles. The population in 1901 &lt;br /&gt;
was 560,402, compared with 525,910 in 1891. The west of the sub- &lt;br /&gt;
division lies on the fringe of the Chota Nagpur plateau, and this portion &lt;br /&gt;
is very sparsely populated ; towards the east, which consists of a fertile &lt;br /&gt;
highly cultivated plain, the density increases, the average for the whole &lt;br /&gt;
subdivision being 503 persons per square mile. It contains one town, &lt;br /&gt;
Jajpur (population, 12,111), its head-quarters ; and 1,580 villages.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>
