Head-quarters of the Naga Hills District, Eastern &lt;br /&gt;
Bengal and Assam, situated in 25 degree 41' N. and 94  degree7' E., about 5,000 feet &lt;br /&gt;
above the level of the sea. The cart-road from Dimapur in the Brah- &lt;br /&gt;
maputra Valley to Manipur passes through the town. Population &lt;br /&gt;
(1901), 3,093. The rainfall averages 76 inches, and the climate is &lt;br /&gt;
cool and pleasant. The head-quarters of the District were first located &lt;br /&gt;
at this place in 1878, with the object of bringing the powerful tribe of &lt;br /&gt;
AngamI Nagas, in whose territory it is situated, more completely under &lt;br /&gt;
control. The station is situated on a spur of the hill near the large &lt;br /&gt;
Naga village from which it takes its name, and contains a small jail &lt;br /&gt;
with accommodation for 32 persons and a hospital with 10 beds. The &lt;br /&gt;
garrison consists of two companies of native infantry and a battalion &lt;br /&gt;
of military police. &lt;br /&gt;
