Sometimes, a teacher does know best. With 38 years of experience, Krishna Kumar’s endeavours at the National Council for Educational Research and
Training (NCERT) have changed the face of education. He started teaching at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, in 1971 but shifted gears in 1981, when he joined the Central Institute of Education.

The jewel in his crown has been the National Curriculum Framework in 2005 that escalated the percentage of students studying NCERT’s textbooks from 3 per cent of India’s total in 2004 to 32 today. Introducing non-textual, audiovisual and multi-media material in the curriculum, he has broken the straight-jacket imposed on several subjects.

He’s working to change the teacher training structure in the country. Using EDUSAT, a satellite for education, the trainers at NCERT interact with teachers, teaching them to use the new tools of learning.
