=Kumher=&lt;br /&gt;
Head-quarters of a Tahsil o{ the same name in the State &lt;br /&gt;
of Bharatpur, Rajputana, situated in 27° 19' N. and 77° 23' E., about &lt;br /&gt;
II miles northwest of Bharatpur city. Population (1901), 6,240. The &lt;br /&gt;
town is surrounded by a mud wall and ditch, and possesses a post and &lt;br /&gt;
telegraph office, a vernacular school attended by about 130 boys, and &lt;br /&gt;
a dispensary. The place is said to take its name from its founder, &lt;br /&gt;
Kumbha, a Jat of the village of Sinsini, about 6 miles to the north-west. &lt;br /&gt;
The palace and fort were built by Maharaja Badan Singh about 1724, &lt;br /&gt;
and thirty years later the place was unsuccessfully besieged by the &lt;br /&gt;
Marathas, when Khande Rao Holkar, the son of Malhar Rao, was &lt;br /&gt;
killed. His cenotaph, erected by his widow, .\halya Bai, at the village &lt;br /&gt;
of Gangarsoli, 3 miles to the north, is still maintained by the Indore &lt;br /&gt;
