Chennai/Mysuru : Few playback singers have shaped south Indian cinema the way S Janaki did. Whether it was romance, sorrow, devotional, folk music or a light comedy, she could alter the texture of her voice to suit the character on screen, making audiences forget there was a singer behind the actor.

 Born in Andhra Pradesh, Janaki moved to Chennai in the mid-1950s and joined AVM Studios and became the voice of Tamil cinema over the decades. But, her strongest musical bond was with Karnataka and she recorded the highest number of songs in Kannada. Her playback journey began in 1957 with the Tamil film ‘Vidhiyin Vilayattu’ but her breakthrough came with ‘Singara Velane Deva’ from ‘Konjum Salangai’ (1962). The song remains one of Tamil cinema’s greatest musical achievements and announced her arrival as a singer adept at blending classical finesse with cinematic expression. The legendary singer went on to record more than 48,000 songs in over 20 languages in a career spanning over six decades. 

Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, she delivered a string of memorable hits in Tamil cinema under the baton of ‘king of melody’ M S Viswanathan. While MSV championed Janaki, it was Ilaiyaraaja who elevated her to legendary status.

 Their collaboration, often alongside S P Balasubrahmanyam, transformed Tamil film music from the late 1970s through the 1990s.
 Ilaiyaraaja repeatedly trusted Janaki with his most demanding compositions because of her unmatched ability to shift effortlessly between Western melodies, Carnatic ragas, rustic folk numbers and emotionally charged ballads. Janaki’s greatest strength was her ability to perform a song rather than merely sing it. She laughed, cried, whispered, giggled, teased and even mimicked voices whenever the situation arose. Directors often remarked that she could understand a character’s emotional graph after a single narration.

 After the arrival of A R Rahman on the scene in the 1990s, she continued to produce memorable songs with him despite a new generation of singers emerging.  

She received four National Film Awards, several Filmfare Awards and numerous state honours during her distinguished career. She, however, declined the Padma Bhushan awarded by the Union govt as a mark of protest, saying south Indian artistes had not been suitably recognised.  

After a career spanning nearly 60 years and thousands of songs across several Indian languages. Janaki chose to retire from playback singing in 2017 and made Mysuru her home. Unlike many artists whose careers faded gradually, she stepped away on her own terms, leaving behind a catalogue that continues to inspire singers across generations.
