The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, was amended in 1992 and Central Zoo Authority was established to oversee the functioning of zoos in the country. In 2003, rescue centres and circuses were also brought under the definition of zoo. There are 195 zoos in India which are recognized by the central zoo authority. Over 100 zoos are managed by various state forest departments. Over a quarter of them are privately run -31 privately owned and 26 run by NGOstrustssocieties.West Bengal has the highest number of zoos in the country. It is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. Overall, there are more than 48,000 animals kept in these zoos of which 142 are endangered species.
