A class of Maithil or Tirhutiya Brahmans in Behar who derive their name from the practice of selling themselves or their sons in marriage to the daughters of the lower classes of Maithil Brahmans. Some Bikauwa Brahmans have as many as forty or fifty wives under this system. The wives live with . their own parents, and are visited at intervals by their husbands.
