Meena Kapoor's lilting voice aptly articulated the eagerness of expectant love in the superhit 1950 track, Mori atariya pe kaaga bole(film: ‘Aankhen’, music: Madan Mohan).
In a career spread over nearly two decades (1946-1965), Kapoor sang 100-odd numbers. She sang for many top composers like SD Burman, C Ramchandra, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Khayyam, Sajjad Hussain and, of course, Biswas. She was equally at home crooning playful melodies such as Pyaara pyaara hai sama my dear come to me (film: Kamal, music: SD Burman, cosinger: Motilal, 1949) or songs of ache (Gham sehna hai, lab seena hai, film: Raees, music: Manohar Arora, 1948). Her biggest hit, however, came under the baton of C Ramchandra, Aana meri jaan meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday (film: ‘Shehnai’, 1947).
Kapoor and noted music director Anil Biswas were married in 1959. The duo moved to Delhi in the early 1960s. Kapoor spent her last days in Kolkata.
