Relay squad upgraded to gold/ 2020
Belated gold for Indian relay squad, July 24, 2020: The Times of India
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
New Delhi:
India added one more gold to their 2018 Asian Games tally after the silver won in 4x400m mixed relay team [Mohammed Anas, MR Poovamma, Hima Das and Arokia Rajiv] was upgraded to gold as a member of the Bahraini squad was banned for four years for doping. Bahrain had won gold in the race in Jakarta. The ban also ensured another bronze for India as Anu Raghavan moved from fourth place to bronze medal position in the women's 400m hurdles, which the banned Bahrain runner Kemi Adekoya had won with a Games record.
Interestingly, India had lodged a protest stating that a Bahraini runner had caused obstruction to Hima Das during the relay. However, their appeal was rejected by the Games’ Jury of Appeals. With the upgrade, India are now the first winners of the event introduced in the Asian Games in 2018 in keeping with the international bid to find gender balance.
The new medals take India's tally to 70, with 16 gold, 23 silver and 31 bronze. It, however, remains in 8th position in the medals table.
