The 83 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1963

A note about the credits

Who wrote the song Hañsta hua noorãni chehra for the film Parasmani? A usually reliable website said Farooq Qaisar, while Prof. Bhargava, rightly, credited it to Asad Bhopali, as confirmed by SaReGaMa.

A note about years

Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein’s jacket says that Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke was released in 1962. Mr Sayani’s commentary, Sureela Safar and Geet Kosh put it in 1963. Geet Kosh should have been enough but out of abundant caution Indpaedia checked the film’s censor certificate. 14 February 1963, it read. An ironic date for a film about a murder arising out of an extra-marital affair, but appropriate to the film’s title.

Jaidev: unsuccessful despite Hum Dono

The first mystery that Mr Sayani hints at is why Dev Anand’s Navketan never repeated Jaidev as music director despite the phenomenal success of his score for Navketan’s 1961 film Hum Dono? (The film included the no. 2 and no. 12 hits of the year.)

Everyone—from the Anands to Jaidev—was always tight-lipped about this. Indpaedia’s theory is that Navketan’s regular composer, the very powerful SD Burman (who had been among Jaidev’s bosses), had taken offence to being left out of Hum Dono, despite having given Navketan all its top musical hits, before and after.

The second mystery surrounds the breakup of Sahir and Jaidev. They had collaborated on Hum Dono’s timeless classics. Mujhe Jeene Do was being made around that time (1962). Sahir had penned four lyrics for the film. He was a superstar. Jaidev, despite a major hit under his belt, had not outgrown the ‘assistant to music directors’ label. The normal protocol is for the lyricist to go over to the music director’s music room (normally a room in the composer’s house), where they sit together and marry the score to the words. Sahir, perhaps because of his stature, sent word to Jaidev that whoever wanted to set his words to music would have to come over to his, Sahir’s, house, along with his tabla and baaja (normally a harmonium). Jaidev found this unacceptable (and, obviously, inconvenient). Therefore, they never worked together again.

Pyar ka aalam

The low-budget film Yeh Dil Kisko Dooñ, one of Shashi Kapoor’s earliest as a hero, had an absolutely delicious Rafi song that went, Phir aane laga yaad wohi pyar ka aalam. GCM, in its usual blundering manner, specified that this was a 1962 film, though in his commentary Mr Sayani had said that it was a 1963 film.

There was only Geet Kosh to appeal to, and 1963 it said. YouTube agreed. The film’s censor certificate renewal of 1983, too, hints at 1963.

In the process Indpaedia’s volunteers found the answer to what had till then been a mystery to them. Whose was the female voice that popped up periodically and uttered just three little words: Pyar ka aalam? It was pointless to check with the GCM jacket or its equally sloppy parent website, Saregama, both of which credit only Mohammed Rafi with the singing. Perhaps for that reason radio jockeys of even the 1960s normally forgot to mention the female singer of this song.

Only a year later, in 1964, Sangam’s Hoga ki naheen started a tradition that was taken forward by Aman’s Aaj ki raat and An Evening in Paris’ ja-ja. All of these (and many subsequent) films gave copious credit to their leading ladies, who were no singers, for the phrases that they mouthed.

Therefore, it was often assumed that the phrase Pyar ka aalam must have been chanted by Yeh Dil’s heroine (Ragini, we are informed by the film’s credits) before it became fashionable to credit non-singing stars.

Not so. Geet Kosh tells that it was Usha Khanna’s voice. The film’s credit titles include Khanna among those who sang for the film.

(There must have something seriously wrong with the singing credits of this film’s discs. Even Geet Kosh does not know who the female singer of Mera dil tum pe aa gaya was. The book just says, ‘female voice.’ Geet Kosh had to contact Iqbal Qureshi to solve the mystery of Pyar ka aalam, and to get the name of the singer of Main hoon pyare teri diwani [it was Asha Bhosle].)

Ramlal

Ramlal, the music director of Sehra, was a leading shehnai player, an instrument that you can hear on Taqdeer ka fasana. Chandrakantha informs us that his full name was Ramlal Hirapanna.

Songs in the ‘next rung’

The Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein CDs list 11songs that were ‘in the shade’ (chhaoñ songs) this year. Prof Bhargava has compiled a list of 16 runners-up. The two lists have no songs in common. Thus, between the two, there are 27 unique songs in the ‘next rung.’

GC: Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)
