The 37 most popular Hindi-Urdu songs of 1989

A note about the Geet Mala

Rapidly deteriorating (short-wave) reception of Radio Ceylon compelled Ciba to look towards the infinitely clearer medium-wave All India Radio. However, AIR refused to broadcast a programme called Geetmala because that name was associated with its rival, Radio Ceylon. Cibaca had to compromise and, with effect from the 6 November 1989 broadcast, renamed the programme ‘Sangeetmala.’

For a few weeks (including a few weeks in 1990) the programme was broadcast from both Radio Ceylon and 24 stations of AIR’s popular music channel, Vividh Bharati. Then when the Geetmala gave up on Radio Ceylon altogether and shifted entirely to AIR’s Vividh Bharati, it reverted to its original name, Geetmala.

Therefore, for symbolic reasons, to show the changing and evolving life of India’s most popular radio programme (Mr Sayani claims that they had the biggest listenership in the world, which, given the huge Hindi-Urdu speaking population, is plausible), Indpaedia’s Hindi-Urdu hit song pages for 1989 and 1990 bear the title Cibaca Sangeetmala.

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (‘Raag’ is frequently spelt ‘raga,’ while ‘taal’ is also spelt ‘tal.’)

Wherever a taal has been mentioned, it is the one verified by ChandraKantha.com, and sometimes the raags, too.
