Shimla municipal corporation

2017: BJP wins

After 30yrs, BJP wins Shimla municipal polls, June 18, 2017: The Times of India

The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the Shimla municipal corporation polls on Saturday , ahead of the assembly election in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh in 2017.

The party secured 17 out of the 34 seats. The victory comes after PM Narendra Modi's rally at Shimla's landmark Ridge on April 27, where BJP leaders had claimed a landslide victory . CM Virbhadra Singh put up a tough fight and the Congress managed 13 seats. Three seats went to independents and one to CPIM.With the support of one independent, the BJP is set to have its mayor and deputy mayor. In the new House, 50% seats are reserved for women and the post of Mayor has been reserved for a woman-SC candidate.

In 2012, the elections were fought on party symbol and there was direct election for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor. Prior to 2012 election, the Congress had ruled the Shimla Municipal Corporation for over 25 years. The Congress rule ended in 2012 when CPI(M) won the posts of mayor and deputy mayor in direct elections, creating history.
