The 51 most popular/ significant Hindi-Urdu songs of 1952

Nine songs based on listeners’ mail

HindiLyrics4u. writes: ‘Binaca Geetmala was broadcast for the first time on 3rd December, 1952. There were 5 program[me]s during the 5 Wednesdays and the final program[me] was broadcast on 31st December, 1952.’

For that reason, there could obviously not have been any ‘annual list’ in 1952.

In 1952 itself BGM did not compile any annual charts. However, ‘on the basis of letters received from listeners, [the] 9 most popular songs [of the year] were short-listed and broadcast.’ (HindiLyrics4u.)

Prof. Anil Bhargava reminds us that on the silver jubilee of Binaca Geet Mala, broadcast on 8 January 1978, the [same nine songs] were declared the most popular songs of 1952,’ perhaps in the order given below. There can be little doubt that the no.1 song not just of 1952 but of several adjacent years as well was ‘Tu Ganga ki mauj.’

The next rung of songs

For the years before and after Binaca and other Geetmalas, Indpaedia has tried to compile ‘meta-lists’ of the most significant songs of those years. Typically, meta-lists are aggregates of other lists on the same subject.

For 1952 the sources consulted by Indpaedia were:

C= Geetmala ki Chhaon Mein is a set of 50 CDs issued by Saregama in instalments that continued into 2012-13. The set concentrated on songs that had ‘remained in the shadow’ (chhaoñ) of the main annual list of Binaca and its successor Geet Malas. These, thus, were the ‘next rung’ of songs, which were popular but did not make it to the main annual list.

Y= Yaadon ki Manzil is a set of 9 CDs issued by Saregama in 2011, containing songs from ‘1930 to 1980.’ The set had first been released on black discs (vinyl LPs/ ‘long-playing’ records) and audio cassettes in 1986. No claim has been made to the effect that these were the biggest selling songs of their respective years.

B= The Best of Bollywood Ever is a set of 10 CDs issued by Saregama in 2010, containing “the biggest hits from the 1930’s [sic] to 2010.’

A= Anil Bhargava, Binaca Geetmala ka Sureela Safar (Hindi; 2007; Rs.1,200), Vangmaya Prakashan, Jaipur-302015. vangmaya_jpr@yahoo.com). Prof Bhargava has tried to visualise the 8 songs that would have also made it to the Binaca Geet Mala annual list, had the said Programme had such a list for 1952.

Raags in songs

Few film songs that have a root in Indian classical music remain faithful to a raag throughout their length. Indpaedia volunteers have sometimes mentioned raags even when there is merely a hint of that raag in a song. (Raag is also spelt raga.)

A note on raags

Is Mohe bhool gaye sanwariya from Baiju Bawra in Raag Aheer Bhairav or in Raag Kalingada. The two raags are almost identical.

Dr. Sudeep S Bhagwath feels that ‘Ai merey dil kaheen aur chal’ from Daag is in Komal Rishabh Ãsãwari. Because he has pointed out that his research is not original, Indpaedia’s volunteers have stuck to the accepted Raag Bhairavi.
