Hum Aapke Hain Koun @ 20: Lesser Known Facts

The Times of India

The first Bollywood film to collect over 1 billion, Hum Aapke Hain Koun is still remembered as one of the purest and most innocent love stories of all times. The film explored Indian values, traditions, romance and presented it in a grand way on screen.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! was a remake of 'Nadiya Ke Paar'. Released in 1982 the film was made under Rajshri Productions. The film starred Sachin, Sadhana Singh, Inder Thakur, Mitali in lead roles. Inder Thakur, who played the role of Sachin's elder brother in the movie Inder Thakur, died in the crash of Air India Flight 182. The film was basically a rural love story. The film was later dubbed into Telugu as Premalayam.

As per a report in IMDB, the late and acclaimed painter M.F. Hussain had seen the film 85 times. MF Hussain's inclination towards Madhuri was a well known fact. Infact MF Hussain was so charmed by Madhuri after watching Hum Aapke Hain Koun that he made a film which starred Madhuri in lead role. The film titled 'Gajagamini' was a box office disaster. MF Hussain also made many paintings on Madhuri.

As per a report in Indian Express, Madhuri was paid a salary of Rs. 27,535,729 for the role of Nisha. It was the first Hindi film to have made a collection of over 1 billion at the box office. Box Office India described it as "the biggest blockbuster of the modern era." It won a Filmfare Award for the Best Film. Sooraj Barjatya bagged Best Director award that year. Madhuri Dixit won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a leading role. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

'Didi Tera Devar' emerged as the most popular wedding number of the season. But very few know that the song is inspired by 'Saare Nabian'. The song 'Saare Nabian' was sung by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The film in total had 14 songs which was much beyond the average number of songs in any film. Songs like Maye Ni Maye, Joote De Do, Hum Aapke Hain Koun became quite popular with the masses. The album emerged as one of the top selling albums of the year.

10 life lessons the film taught us

Stuti Srivastava | 23 years of ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’: 10 life lessons the film taught us | August 05, 2017 | Miss Kyra

A female actor impersonating Prem (Salman Khan) and Madhuri Dixit in the iconic Didi tera devar song from Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!

It's been 23 years since Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit starrer 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' released. The film is every 90s kids' idea of entertainment. And not only is the film etched in our minds but also remains one of our feel-good films to fall upon whenever low. The film not only instilled in us some family values but also changed the idea of love for us. And so, here are 10 life lessons from 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' that perfectly describe what the film was all about.

Family comes first!

Rajshri Productions is known to make family oriented films that speak highly about the culture, traditions and importance of family values in our lives. And so, 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit was no different. Seldom portraying violence and hatred in their work, 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' was Rajshri's yet another attempt at saying 'family comes first'.

Coughing is a way to flirt

You remember the scene when Salman and Madhuri AKA Prem and Nisha first met in the film? Just to recall, Prem and Nisha's first meeting is unlike any other love story. They first met when Prem goes to Ramtedki with uncle Kailashnath (Alok Nath) and brother Rajesh (Mohnish Behl) to ask for Pooja's (Renuka Shahane) hand in marriage.

Prem and Nisha's first meet involves a little bit of lighthearted bickering even as fun and mischief continue through the wedding rituals and so on.

You are blessed to have a sibling

I am sure you must have heard the quote - 'I may fight with my sibling. But once you lay a finger on them, you will be facing me'. The film throughout its course talks about the relationship siblings share and the sacrifices they make for each other. The relationship between the siblings is truly heartwarming!

Family gatherings are the best place to find a match

Do you want to find a match for yourself? You know where to go!

There is no age for romance

While the film is Prem and Nisha's love story, there is another brewing romance that you cannot miss! Anupam Kher and Reema Lagoo's moment of romance in the film do not go unnoticed. These moments further define that romance has no age bar.

Dialogues are too clichéd, why not sing?

Not many know, but 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' is a musical. The film had a total number of 14 songs, however, between the scenes the songs flowed in with utmost ease not making the film boring at even one point.

Parents don’t always understand you

The film just crashed the notion that our 'parents understand us better'. Throughout the film not even once did Reema Lagoo, Anupam Kher or Alok Nath realise that there was a romance brewing between Nisha and Prem. Not once, I tell you.

Friendships last longer if you turn them into a relationship

Friendships today may be fickle, but our ancestors were better at keeping relationships. In years gone past, it was a rather common practice to get your child married to a friend's child.

Be careful while running up and down the stairs

Be careful while on the stairs is the most important lesson I learnt from the film. After watching the film, never have I ran on the stairs just so I don't slip and fall and end up losing my life just like Pooja (Renuka Sahane) did while she was going to attend a phone call. Accident prone area, be careful!

Dogs are man’s best friend

The film would have been incomplete without Tuffy. He was the best character in the film, and his memories forever shall remain etched. If it wasn't for Tuffy, then Prem and Nisha would've never ended in a matrimony.
