To know what meditation is, we need to go within ourselves, and, in the words of Sadhu TL Vaswani, “sink deeper and deeper”. No one else can do that for us; we need to do it ourselves. We need to silence the clamour of our unruly minds. We need to strip ourselves of all pride and passion, selfishness, sensuality and sluggishness of soul. We need to remove veil after veil until we reach the inmost depths and touch the pure white flame.

As a first step, we need to throw the dirt out of our mind. You are what you think, taught the rishis of ancient India. Therefore, take care of your thoughts. Often, we pay scant attention to our thoughts. We say, ‘after all, it was but a thought’. But we must never forget that thoughts are forces, thoughts are the building blocks of life. With thoughts we are building the edifice of our own life, building our own future. People blame their stars, their destiny. “Men heap together the mistakes of their lives,” said John Hobbes, “and create a monster they call destiny.” Destiny is not a matter of chance: it is a matter of choice.

We are building our own destiny, every day, with the thoughts that we think. A thought, if it is constantly held in the mind, will drive us to action. An action that is repeated, creates a habit. It is our habits that form our character. And it is character that determines our destiny.

The Buddha speaks of five types of meditation. The first is meditation of love in which we so adjust our heart that we wish for the happiness of all living things, including the happiness of our enemies.

The third is meditation of joy, in which we think of the prosperity of others and rejoice with their rejoicings.

The fifth is meditation on serenity, in which we rise above love and hate, tyranny and oppression, wealth and want, and regard our own fate with impartial calm and perfect tranquility.

Meditation disciplines the mind, sharpens concentration and improves memory. It also energises body and mind. Thus modern medical practitioners have begun to use it as an effective aid in healing and therapy. Meditation also helps the mind to relate to our inner instinct-intuition. This connection aids our creativity and innovative thinking. Thus meditation is a systematic method of tapping human brilliance.

A troubled conscience will never allow us to live in peace and quiet – and our conscience will continue to remain troubled unless we rid ourselves of the hatred and resentment that makes us unforgiving.

If we wish to achieve inner peace, there is only one way – release ourselves from anger and resentment, learn to let go of hatred, and practise forgiveness.

Medical experts tell us that anger accelerates the ageing process. Anger is indeed a very natural human reaction. But if we let anger remain in the heart within, it ceases to be mature and natural; it festers into a grudge. When we refuse to forgive people, we are letting our grudge control our life.

We all know that stress causes insomnia, but so can bitterness! Research has even revealed a relationship between unresolved anger and cardiac arrest. People who hold grudges fall easy prey to illness and disease. When they make the conscious decision to cease hatred and resentment – they set themselves on the road to recovery. This is why hatred has been likened to cancer – it is the cancer of bitterness that destroys both body and soul.

A woman suffered from severe rheumatic pains in the knee joint. No medicines were of any avail. The pain went on increasing, until a holy man asked her, “Do you hold a grudge against anyone?” She hesitated, then answered, “My mind is seething with resentment against my own sister who did not behave properly towards me.” The holy man said to her, “Your pains will disappear only when you forgive her and make peace with her.”

At first, she found it difficult to do so. Later, she met her sister and gave her a hug and said to her, “Let bygones be bygones! Let us begin anew!”

To her amazement, she found that soon thereafter the pains disappeared.

We still can’t explain or even understand how the body-mind-soul connection works. But there is a vast amount of documented research that links the working of the body with the thoughts and feelings of the mind. Our emotional turmoil is manifested in our body. We begin to be at war with ourselves. Doctors have a peculiar word – to somaticise. It simply means taking an emotional issue and unconsciously displacing it on to our own body. The result can be anything from a perforated ulcer to a cancerous growth!

Doctors and counsellors at the CMC Hospital at Vellore, have carried out research on patients to prove that several physical ailments are directly related to emotional root causes. Resentment, un-forgiveness, hostility, guilt, anger and enmity cause diseases related to heart, lungs, chest, stomach, intestines, ear, nose and throat.

These researches show that repressed resentment, anger and un-forgiveness lead to definite problems in the organs of digestion, as well as in the head, eyes and ears. These negative emotions are “bottled up” inside us, and we keep “swallowing” their toxic contents, until they affect our health.

A woman met a holy man and confessed that she resented a prominent sister of the community. The holy man said to her, “Go to her immediately. Don’t try to justify yourself. Tell her that you have had unkind thoughts about her. Be humble and ask for forgiveness.”

The woman said, “I can’t forget the hurt she had inflicted on me.” But the person who holds a grudge injures himself more than the one against whom the grudge is held. Hurt leads to hate, which is the second stage. I cannot forget how much i have been hurt and i cannot send out thoughts of goodwill to my enemy. In some cases, i hate the person so much that i want him to suffer, as much as i am suffering.

Madam Chiang Kai Shek, we read, hated the Japanese. Her mother was a pious woman. Madam Chiang Kai Shek said to her, “Why don’t you pray to God that Japan may drown in the waters of the ocean?” Her mother, of course, said to her, “My child, how can i offer such an evil prayer?”

Hatred was painted by an artist as an old man shriveled up and pale as death, clutching in his jaws lighted torches and serpents, and cruelly tearing out his own heart with black, decayed teeth.

Explaining the picture, the artist said, “Hatred is an old man because it is as ancient as mankind, pale because he who hates, torments himself and lives a tragic life, with claws because it is so unmerciful, with torches and serpents because it creates discord, and it tears out its heart because it is self-destructive.”

In the third stage, God’s grace descends on me and i begin to see the person who has hurt me in a new light and begin to understand his difficulty. I feel healed. I am free again.

A girl came to a holy man and said, “I know not why, but i am unable to sit in silence and pray or meditate. I feel restless. I used to be so happy … I think it has something to do with one whom, at one time, i regarded as a friend. But she was very cruel to me, and i said that i would never forgive her, never talk to her. I am sorry i said it, but since then there has been no peace in my heart.”

The holy man said, “It is better to break a bad vow than to keep it. Go to her and seek her forgiveness.” The next morning, she went to her friend and confessed her uncharitable attitude and asked her forgiveness.

The one whose forgiveness was sought burst into tears. She said, “You have come to ask for forgiveness. It is i who should be asking for forgiveness, for i am ashamed of my wrong attitude.” The two friends were reconciled.

The fourth stage is of coming together. I am anxious to make friends with the person who hurt me. I invite him into my life. I share my love with him and we both move to a new and healed relationship.

Hatred was painted by an artist as an old man shriveled up and pale as death, clutching in his jaws lighted torches and serpents, and cruelly tearing out his own heart with black, decayed teeth.

Explaining the picture, the artist said, “Hatred is an old man because it is as ancient as mankind, pale because he who hates, torments himself and lives a tragic life, with claws because it is so unmerciful, with torches and serpents because it creates discord, and it tears out its heart because it is self-destructive.”

In the third stage, God’s grace descends on me and i begin to see the person who has hurt me in a new light and begin to understand his difficulty. I feel healed. I am free again.

A girl came to a holy man and said, “I know not why, but i am unable to sit in silence and pray or meditate. I feel restless. I used to be so happy … I think it has something to do with one whom, at one time, i regarded as a friend. But she was very cruel to me, and i said that i would never forgive her, never talk to her. I am sorry i said it, but since then there has been no peace in my heart.”

The holy man said, “It is better to break a bad vow than to keep it. Go to her and seek her forgiveness.” The next morning, she went to her friend and confessed her uncharitable attitude and asked her forgiveness.

The one whose forgiveness was sought burst into tears. She said, “You have come to ask for forgiveness. It is i who should be asking for forgiveness, for i am ashamed of my wrong attitude.” The two friends were reconciled.

The fourth stage is of coming together. I am anxious to make friends with the person who hurt me. I invite him into my life. I share my love with him and we both move to a new and healed relationship.

True love is not attachment or possessiveness. Attachment of any kind, as the Gita tells us, leads to suffering. Abhinivesha, clinging and attachment, is an impediment – not only on the path of liberation, but also in the attainment of personal happiness. On the other hand, detachment is one of life’s greatest lessons for those who seek the true joy of life. As an inspired poet wrote, “If you love someone very dearly, give him wings: let him fly!”

Have you heard of the king who loved his nightingale so dearly that he let it fly to its freedom? He kept the bird in a golden cage in the royal apartment, and would have the bird sing for him every day. The song was always captivating; but it was so sad, that the king would cry his heart out.


Happy song

One day, he said to the nightingale, “Dear, I am weighed down by the cares and troubles of the kingdom. Can’t you, just for once, sing me a happy song, a song of joy and laughter?”

“I could indeed,” sighed the nightingale. “I could sing you a song of the green woods, the wide open spaces and the cloudless, blue sky. But I cannot, cannot, sing it from this cage! For that, you must set me free, and allow me to taste the joy of liberation. Then indeed, I will come back to sing to you the happiest song you have ever heard.”

“I will set you free?” said the king, “I am sure you will take yourself off, and never, ever come back to me.”

“If you give me my freedom, how can I treat you in such an ungrateful way? I promise you, I shall come back to you every night, and sing you to sleep with the sweetest and most joyous lullaby you could ever hear.”

“Alright,” said the king. “I love you far too much to deny you freedom. I shall set you free right away. I do have misgivings that I may never see you again. But, I will be happy to know that somewhere, some place, you will be free and singing a happy song.”

With a heavy heart, the king opened the door of the cage, stroked the nightingale lovingly, carried it to the window, and allowed it to flutter away into the deep woods behind the palace.

There was a great surprise in store for him, the next evening. As he returned to his room after a long and tiring day at the court and sank into bed, exhausted, he heard a beautiful song! It came from the window, and he ran to the window to discover his beloved nightingale singing its heart out for him!


Gift of freedom

“Dear, dear bird,” he cried happily, “You came back; you came back to me as you promised!”

“Not just today, but every day I shall come back to sing for you, O, king,” said the nightingale. “You gave me the greatest of all gifts, the gift of freedom. How can I not keep up my promise to you!” And so, it came to pass that the little nightingale came to sing for the king every night, filling his heart and his life with sheer joy!
