BJP-backed parties win bypolls

With alliance partners National People’s Party (NPP) and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidates winning the bypolls to the South Tura (ST) and Ranikor assembly seats respectively on Monday, BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) has further consolidated its position in the 60-member assembly. MDA has increased its tally from 37 to 39 in the House. In the Meghalaya assembly, BJP and NCP with 2 and 1 seats, respectively, are backing the MDA government led by the NPP which has 20 seats. UDP (8 seats), People’s Democratic Front (4 seats), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (2 seats) and 2 independents are supporting MDA. While Meghalaya CM and NPP candidate Conrad Sangma won the South Tura seat by 8,421 votes, UDP’s Pius Marwein bagged the Ranikor seat with a margin of 2,896 votes. Pius defeated NPP candidate.
