Padmanabha Swami Temple in Kerala: Cuisine

The Times of India

Devoted to Lord Vishnu, PadmanabhaSwamy temple has an 18 foot long Lord Maha Vishnu idol. There is a belief that the sage Divakaramuni was blessed with a vision of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Divakaramuni saw the deity of the temple taking an unripe mango on a coconut shell as an offering plate before performing the puja.

So, in memory of the legend, naivedyam or prasada of rice served to the deity is offered in a coconut shell. Besides, there is the PaalPayasam – milk cooked with rice and sweetened – which is also used as prasada. Other offerings include UnniAppams, spongy-brown fried pieces made using mélange of rice powder, banana, jackfruit and jiggery. Additionally, Aval, crushed wheat with sugar and Avial, a spicy mix of vegetables, fresh coconut and coconut oil cooked using mustard seeds and eaten with rice are used as offerings at this temple.

Though most of the devotees and visitors relish temple food because of their religious beliefs, its delicious taste and traditional flavours are a treat for those who love food. By: MadhuliTrivedi
