The new actor became an overnight star even before the release of the film as her Instagram followers crossed one million, and are still rising every minute. The 18-year-old even became one of the most searched-for Indian people on Google for a short period after her video went viral.

Social media users can’t stop making memes of Varrier’s impish smile and wink and photoshopping or editing it with images and videos of people as diverse as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Katrina Kaif and Virat Kohli to make it comical.

However, it seems some sections of the society were not amazed after looking at her expressions as an FIR has been registered against Omar Lulu, the director of Oru Adaar Love over the lyrics of the song. The complainants, Zaheer Ali Khan, Muqeeth Khan, residents of Falaknuma in Hyderabad, alleged that song when translated to English, hurts the sentiments of Muslims as it makes derogatory references to the Prophet. They have demanded that either the song should be removed from the film or the lyrics should be changed.

Also starring Siyadh Shajahan and Noorin Shereef, Oru Adaar Love is set to release on March 1 2018.

Fatwa, FIR against Jabbar/ Rehman’s song referring to Khadijah Bibi in Omar’s film

P Pavan | Hyderabad seminary issues fatwa against Priya Prakash Varrier’s viral song Manikya Malaraya Poovi | Feb 15, 2018 | Mumbai Mirror

Hyderabad-based Islamic seminary, Jamia Nizamia, has issued a fatwa against ’s viral Malayalam song urging the authorities concerned to remove the song before releasing the film Oru Adaar Love.

The fatwa is issued against the backdrop of some youths lodging a complaint with the Falaknuma police that the song had hurt their religious sentiments. It may be mentioned that a case had already been registered under Section 295(A) of Indian Penal Code (deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of a class) against the film producer, based on a complaint by engineering student Muqeeth Khan and his friends.

The video features Priya as a school student giving a wink to a boy in her class room. A simple clip of her wink has shot her into the hearts of millions of viewers. Her nain-mattaka and latke-jhatke in merely 30 seconds of the video have instantly made her recipient of a crush of several boys across the country.

Police had registered a case against the director of the Malayalam film over a complaint that the lyrics of the song hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims.

The complainants alleged that the song Manikya Malaraya Poovi in the film written and directed by Omar Lulu had an "objectionable" reference to Prophet Muhammad's wife.

“Our objection is not for the film, but for the song which has references to Prophet Muhammad and his wife Khadijah Bibi. The director should have used some other characters to depict the love. Why should he take the name of the Prophet?” Jamia Nizamia secretary Ahmed Ali said justifying the issue of fatwa.

The complaint was filed at the Falaknuma police station by businessman Zaheer Ali Khan, engineering student Muqeeth Khan and others.

Mohammed Abdul Muqeeth Khan told Mirror, "I don't want any publicity. After all I am a small student (doing engineering) who is not willing to take to streets or organise people. I went through the lyrics and tried to understand it.; I approached Google translation. There is the name of our Prophet's wife, Khadijah Bibi. Then, I felt I should raise objection to it".

Zaheer Khan alleged that the song's lyrics hurt the sentiments of Muslims and demanded that either the song be removed from the film or its words be changed.

After the news of the FIR spread, the movie's crew members had said the song would be withdrawn.

However, Lulu and music director Shan Rehman held a press conference later in Kochi to state that they had decided to include the song in the movie as they were getting overwhelming support from the entire Kerala society.

"The song will not be withdrawn for the time being. It will be part of the movie. There are eight more songs in the film," Lulu had said.

Lulu claimed the song had no objectionable reference and said Muslims in a part of Kerala had been singing it for over four decades. "The song written by C M A Jabbar is sung during marriages and every celebration in Malabar region of North Kerala. Malabar Muslims have been singing this song since 1978. If it was not objectionable then, how has it become objectionable now?" Lulu had said.

He told PTI that it was for the censor board to take a final call on the matter.

Priya Prakash Varrier song: Why 'Google translate' may have caused some Muslims to be offended

Highlights

  • Google's translation feature may have inadvertently caused some Muslim groups outside Kerala to take offence over a 'viral' Malayalam song featuring actor Priya Prakash Varrier
  • They believe the song hurts some Muslims' religious sentiments and refers to Prophet Muhammad's wife in a derogatory manner

NEW DELHI: Google's translation feature may have inadvertently caused some Muslim groups outside Kerala to take offence over a 'viral' Malayalam song featuring actor Priya Prakash Varrier.

The song, 'Manikya Malaraya Poovi', from the upcoming film, 'Oru Adaar Love', caused some Muslim groups outside Kerala to register complaints. They believe the song hurts some Muslims' religious sentiments and refers to Prophet Muhammad's wife in a derogatory manner.

'Manikya Malaraya Poovi' is a Mappila song, or a traditional Muslim song from the Moplah, or Malabar, region of Kerala. It describes the love between the Prophet Muhammad and his first wife Khadeeja.

The way the song's first two stanzas are translated in Kerala - where the song is from - is in this manner:

A woman is like a garland made of rubies,

Her highness, Khadeeja Beevi,

She lived in the holy city of Mecca,

Like a regal dignitary.

She has summoned Muhammad, the last Prophet,

Sent him on a trade-expedition.

(But) the very first moment of their meeting,

Her heart desired him.

However, if one uses the 'Google translate' feature, the Malayalam words are rendered mostly as gobbledygook, with some troublesome words - like "moaning" and "Khadeejabibi --- for the price, for sale", featuring in the translation.
