Emulates Jeev With Four European Titles

India Open Champ Has Emulated Jeev With Four European Titles

Belgium's Ryder Cup pro Nicolas Colsaerts summed it up perfectly on his Twitter handle. “I dont think people understand how good SSP Chawrasia's perfomance was last week, was demanding of everyone's game and even more for him.“

DLF G&CC's Gary Player Black Knight course which hosted this year's $1.75m Indian Open measured 7,373.With the 'funky' back nine measuring almost 4,000 yards from the back tees, the focus was on length and ball striking. Not considered a long hitter, SSP was regarded a rank outsider on what people said was purely a `European' co urse, although the undulating greens and hilly terrain left everyone baffled.Englishman Eddie Pepperell, who launched his challenge on Saturday , only to fade away, likened it to a `Disneyland' course probably because of the rollercoaster feeling. The task was huge for the elite field led by World No. 25 Rafa Cabrera Bello, who also experienced the highs and lows before finishing in the Top 5. Only seven players could notch up underpar tournament totals. Olympian Chawrasia, who has travelled all over the world, said this `one of the toughest' courses he had played on. That's what makes it special. Never mind being the first Indian to defend a European Tour title, it was a course that spelt `home disadvantage' but the 38-year-old from Kolkata went about his task, shot by shot, playing regulation golf, dropping only six bogeys in his 72-67-68-71rounds.

It is indeed remarkable what SSP has achieved in his 10-year professional career. He has emulated Padma Shri Jeev Milkha Singh in winning four European titles. He has won half of the eight European Tour events played in India. The wins came on three different courses. While critics would say his game suits the Delhi Golf Club, where he has won the 2016 Indian Open, his 2011 Avantha Masters victory at the DLF's old Arnold Palmer course was considered a breakthrough.
