AIIMS official exposed graft

His fight against corruption may not have earned Sanjiv Chaturvedi many laurels at home but it has got him global recognition. The 2002-batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer of Haryana cadre has been selected for this year's Ramon Magsay say award in the “emergent leadership“ category .

The board of trustees of the Magsaysay Award Foundation said Chaturvedi is being recognized for “his exemplary integrity , courage and tenacity in uncompromisingly exposing and painstakingly investigating corruption in public office, and his resolute crafting of programme and system improvements to ensure that government honourably serves the people“.

Chaturvedi told that the award is a vindication of his actions to fight corruption at AIIMS, where he is currently posted as deputy secretary , and in Haryana where he served in various capacities from 2005 to 2012. “I have faced harassment for my fight but that did not deter me from taking on the system,“ he said.

In August 2014, Chaturvedi was removed from the post of chief vigilance commissioner at AIIMS. He alleged it was because he had detected irregularities at the institute. “I followed the policy of zero tolerance against corruption as espoused by the Prime Minister. But the PM's office failed to help me when the vested interests in the health ministry harassed me by first removing me from the CVO post and then blocking my deputation to Delhi and Uttarakhand,“ Chaturvedi said.

He said he will donate the cash, which he will receive as part of the award, to AIIMS for the benefit of poor patients.

Kalawati, Chaturvedi's mother, said she is elated over the son's success. “Though I feared for his life, I felt proud too for his fight against corruption,“ she said.

The Indian Forest Service official, who has been transferred 12 times in the past five years, had taken on land mafias during his stint in the Haryana government.

“My father always worried about my future. He would often advise me to work honestly .Today , he would be happy to know that my crusade has won me this global recognition,“ Chaturvedi said.
