Dropping all MPs pays off for Shah

Six months ago, when Congress routed BJP in the assembly polls in Chhattisgarh, nobody could have predicted a scoreline as this in the Lok Sabha polls — 9-2 in favour of BJP.

The tactic of dropping all sitting MPs — including those who had been winning four-five times in a row — and fight the election in PM Modi’s name worked like magic. Former CM Raman Singh and all other known leaders played their part — by lying low and not letting anti-incumbency cast a shadow.

The Modi magic demolished all expectations of Congress, which had won 68 of the 90 seats in the recent assembly polls, and was hoping to capitalise on the result. The BJP has convincingly won all Lok Sabha polls in the state ever since it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000.

For Congress, the one that hurt most was Durg — the only seat it had won in 2014. CM Bhupesh Baghel and three ministers represent four assembly segments of this constituency but couldn’t stem the saffron tide. BJP’s Vijay Baghel had secured an unassailable lead of over 3.90 lakh votes by 8.30pm.

Congress has to console itself with victories in Maoistaffected Bastar (ST) constituency — its first after a span of 22 years — and Korba, where it was leading by 27,000 votes.

In the three Lok Sabha elections in Chhattisgarh since 2000, BJP has always won 10-1. It looked under threat after the humiliating defeat in 2018 assembly polls.

But the BJP leadership, under Amit Shah, was determined to offset the loss and used an unconventional tactic. Chhattisgarh was the only state where BJP dropped all its sitting MPs. Shah handpicked the new faces.

BJP even changed its state president ahead of polls, denying sitting MP Vikram Usendi a ticket and making him Chhattisgarh party chief.

It was Modi all the way during the campaign.
