About Pandit Bhagwan Din Dube
Pandit Bhagwan Din Dube, the illustrious founder of B D Dube Inter College Paharpur, Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, was a great industrialist and cherished the noble mission of modernising and developing his village and his people.
He was son of Pt Ram Sukh Dube a police employee of British India with a monthly salary of Rs 4 in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh where he was born on 29 Aug 1897. He passed class 9 exams with very good marks from a govt school in Khandwa.
He came to his ancestral village with his father, mother-Sartaji, Brother Babu Lal and sister Sona and was married to Ku. Dilraji of Sugahi Bagh, Ajeet Nagar, Pratapgarh. Father Ram sukh left for Khandwa but family stayed back in the village. Here he saw the miseries of the village people who were uneducated, without basic amenities of life and socio economically backward. He was so moved that one day he quietly left his village in search of good fortune with just Rs 10 in his pocket which his mother gave him after pawning her jewellery for purchase of books of class 10.
After over 10 years he returned back to his village but now as a millionaire and owner of G.Y Knight and Co. Ltd of Rangoon. By sheer hard work, dedication and loyalty he became a very successful industrialist and a renowned personality of pre independent Indian business scene. An elitist by nature he excelled in every undertaking of his. Remarkably he never forgot his village and his people. He gave education and employment to many. He got constructed a 4 km long road to his village with a bridge on the local rivulet. He opened an English medium school, now a college, with huge play grounds, hostel for students and quarters for teachers and principal. He also constructed a 10 bed hospital with a well for water supply next to it and residences for the doctor and the compounder. He built a post office and got it functional with telegraph facility and a postmaster and a postman. These institutions are serving the people of his village people to this very day.
He donated liberally for the enlistment of the people far and wide in the country. In Allahabad he donated an operation theatre to Kamla Nehru Hospital which still carries boldly his name. Many students of today get the benefit of the scholarships and awards which he commissioned in various universities of India.
His early death on 17 May 1945 at the Park Nursing Home Calcutta extinguished a big social mission which was his passion albeit his fame and sweet memories still vibrate in the area and in the hearts of his people.
