New Delhi : Doubting the bona fide of the Archaeological Survey of India and the central govt, which in 2004, first favoured the protection of the Lodi-era monument of Shaikh Ali 'Gumti' in Defence Colony in Delhi but later changed their stance in 2008, the Supreme Court directed a CBI inquiry to find out under what circumstances the authorities had done a U-turn on the issue.

 A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Ujjal Bhuyan also took exception to the monument, which is believed to be more than 500 year old, being occupied by Defence Colony Welfare Association (DCWA) since 1963 and has asked CBI to probe that aspect along with alteration and changes done to the structure over the years.
