=2017: J&K police gets the highest number=

J&K police walked away with the highest number of police medals for gallantry in 2017, with its personnel bagging 32 of the total 100 awards announced.

While all state police together bagged 78 gallantry medals, 22 gallantry medals went to the central forces, of which CRPF alone accounted for 16. Interestingly, constables and head constables walked away with 55% of the gallantry medals, but the list featured just one IPS officer.

Ten gallantry awards were conferred posthumously , of which four went to Chattisgarh police, two to Jharkhand police and one each to Assam police, CRPF, BSF and SSB. As many as 777 police medals were announced, including 100 police gallantry medals, 597 police medals for meritorious service and 80 President's police medal for distinguished service.

Manipur cop P Sanjoy Singh has won a gallantry award for the eighth time in his career, for a commando operation undertaken in January 2015, that resulted in neutralisation of two insurgents. IPS officer from Assam, Sunil Kumar, is the only bureaucrat to be awarded a gallantry medal this year. He led an operation that led to killing of four NDFB cadres in Kokrajhar in 2014. J&K police officer Nazir Ahmad Kuchey , who has won twin gallantry medals this year. He was involved in killing a dreaded militant in Pulwama in 2014 and a 2015 encounter that resulted in neutralisation of two terrorists in Pulwama.

Of the 78 state cops honoured for gallantry , 32 belong to J&K, 12 to Andhra Pradesh, nine to Jharkhand and seven each to UP and Chhattisgarh.Of gallantry medals won by the Central forces, CRPF has 16, BSF five and one for SSB.

The stress on recognising the competence of lower level police officers is evident from the fact that 55% of the gallantry medals, 62.8% of police medals for meritorious service and 25% of President's police medals for distinguished service went to constables or head-constables.

Jammu & Kashmir police and CRPF personnel who jointly undertook successful counter-terror operations in the Valley state have bagged the lion’s share of 107 police medals for gallantry announced on Republic Day eve this year.

As many as 66 police officers were decorated for acts of gallantry in J&K theatre, including 38 from J&K police and 28 from CRPF. The past year alone saw a record 213 terrorists, including some top commanders, getting neutralised in intelligencebased, well-coordinated operations by the J&K Police, CRPF and Rashtriya Rifles. In addition, a total 59 terrorists were killed in 2017 while trying to infiltrate across LoC/ IB, up from 35 in 2016.


Other than in J&K, 35 police personnel got gallantry medals for counter-Left-Wing Extremism operations and three police personnel were honoured for brave acts in the north-eastern states. Chhattisgarh police personnel bagged 10 gallantry medals and those from Maharashtra police, seven. Six medals went to police personnel in Telangana, three each to Delhi, Meghalaya and Odisha and one each to BSF and Jharkhand police.

Seven gallantry medals were awarded posthumously. Of these six went to personnel from Chhattisgarh police who had valiantly fought Left-Wing Extremists at Pidmel, Chintagufa in Chhattisgarh in April 2015. As many as 35 Maoists were reportedly killed in the counter-attack. A gallantry medal was awarded posthumously to J&K police constable Rajinder Kumar.

Among other counter-operations that got J&K police and CRPF gallantry medals are the Awantipora encounter of March 2017 that killed two A++ category terrorists Aquib Ahmad Bhat of Hizbul Mujahideen and Abu Hamas alias Saifullah of Jaish e Mohammad. Six CRPF officers were decorated for the operation.

Independence Day: CRPF gets max gallantry medals for counter-terror ops in Kashmir, LWE affected states

NEW DELHI: Country's largest paramilitary force, the CRPF, has bagged the maximum of 75 gallantry medals, including a Kirti Chakra and two Shaurya Chakras, for counterterrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir and in the anti-Naxal combat grid, on the eve of Independence Day. 

Harshpal Singh, now promoted in the Second-in-command rank from Deputy Commandant, and constable Zaker Hussain have been decorated with the military medals for killing "three dreaded terrorists of Jaish-e-Mohammed" in September last year in Jammu. 
"Both these brave hearts took bullets and grenade splinters fired by the terrorists but they held their ground till they gunned down all the three terrorists hiding behind a house," their citation stated. 

Singh has been decorated with the Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry medal of the country, while Hussain has been awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one below in precedence than the Kirti Chakra, for this operation. 

Constable Sable Dyaneshwar Shriram of the 53rd battalion of the force was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for killing two armed JeM terrorists after taking them on in Baramulla district of Kashmir valley while he was on 'naka' (checkpost) duty on October 19 last year. 

"These personnel have gone beyond the line of duty and have displayed extreme grit and courage in various combat theatres in Jammu and Kashmir and the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) hit areas. We are very proud of them," Moses Dhinakaran, deputy inspector general (intelligence) and CRPF spokesperson, said. 

The force also bagged two President's Police Medal for Gallantry for Assistant Commandant L Ibomcha Singh and Constable Mohd Majahid Khan (posthumous). 

The duo eliminated two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists who attacked a force camp in the Karan Nagar area of Srinagar on February 12 last year. 

"Singh was instrumental in decimating both the terrorists in a life-threatening situation. Khan showed extreme determination and dedication to duty when he, despite his injuries, kept on engaging the terrorists before succumbing to his injuries," their citation said. 

A number of personnel have also been awarded for their gallantry in anti-Naxal operations in various states. 

While about 3 lakh personnel strength force, CRPF is the only Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to have been decorated with military medals this time, it bagged 72 police gallantry medals out of the 180 declared by the government on Wednesday. 

This is followed by 61 gallantry medals bagged by the J-K Police, 23 by Odisha police, nine by police personnel from Chhattisgarh and five each by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police force.

J&K police win 33% of R-Day gallantry medals

NEW DELHI: Following the abrogation of Jammu & Kashmir’s special status and the extraordinary security vigil that lasted months thereafter, the state police and CRPF personnel deployed in the newly formed Union Territory have been awarded more than half of police gallantry medals. 

The awards announced by the home ministry on Republic Day have seen J&K police personnel being honoured with more than one-third of the total 290 gallantry medals while CRPF has a one-fourth share. 

A total 1,040 service and gallantry medals for police and para-military personnel were announced on Saturday, which include four President’s Police Medals for Gallantry (PPMG), 286 Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG), 93 President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and 657 Police Medal for Meritorious Service. 

J&K police reaped a maximum haul of 108 gallantry medals, including 3 PPMG and 105 PMG. CRPF followed with 76 gallantry honours, including one PPMG awarded posthumously and 75 PMG. 

Of the 76 CRPF personnel honoured, 46 received gallantry medals for services rendered in J&K. While eight of 46 awardees were honoured for action in Srinagar, 38 were awarded police medals for displaying gallantry during operations in Kashmir Valley. 

Together, J&K operations, largely involving fight against terror, got J&K police and CRPF 154 or 53% of the 290 gallantry medals awarded on the occasion of Republic Day 2020. 

Incidentally, anti-terror operations in J&K by Army, CRPF and J&K police in 2018 — to which many of the 2020 gallantry awards may pertain — had seen a record 257 terrorists neutralised. 

The PPMG winners this year include three J&K police personnel — SSP Abdul Jabbar, Dy SP G H Hassan Sheikh and Constable Asif Iqbal Qureshi. 

The only other winner of PPMG is CRPF Constable Utpal Rabha (posthumous), who was honoured for attaining martyrdom while fighting Left-wing extremists in Khunti, West Singhbhum, Jharkhand on June 7, 2018. According to a CRPF release, the PPMG awardee not only held his ground in face of indiscriminate fire by Maoists but in the process ensured safety of his team members. “He laid down his life fighting the Maoists who were raining bullets from their advantageous position in the dense jungle,” it stated.
