INSAT 3-D, India’s advanced meteorological satellite launched by European rocket Ariane 5 from spaceport Kourou in French Guiana (South America) on 26 July 2013.

Data Relay Transponder (DRT): Will get weather, ocean data from remote locations through data collection platforms like automatic weather station, rain gauges and agro-Met stations

Search & Rescue payload: With DRT, it’ll relay alert signals originating from distress beacons to Isro mission control centres. Major users: Coast Guard, airports authority, defence & fi shermen

Nine-channel sounder: Sounding system to provide profi les of temperature, humidity and ozone from surface to top of atmosphere. Met docs will use data to predict weather variations

Six-channel imager better than the KALPANA and INSAT-3A systems: It will take sharper, clearer, deeper photos
