[edit] 2024: strategic partnership

August 23, 2024: The Times of India

New Delhi : PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland saw the two countries elevate the relationship to a strategic partnership and launch a five-year action plan for its implementation with focus among other things on boosting cooperation in defence, including for modernising military equipment, trade and investment, climate, cyber security and counterterrorism.

Modi, who became the first Indian PM to travel to Poland in 45 years, announced after a meeting with his counterpart Donald Tusk that for the welfare of the skilled workforce, skilled workers, and to promote mobility, a Social Security Agreement had been agreed upon between the two countries.
Both leaders agreed that to meet global challenges, reform in the United Nations and international institutions is the need of the hour. Describing terrorism as a big challenge, Modi called for more such cooperation between countries like India and Poland which believe in humanity.

“The two sides reiterated their unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and emphasised that no country should provide a safe haven to those who finance, plan, support or commit terrorist acts. Both sides will make concerted efforts against all terrorists, including by designating individuals affiliated with groups that are listed by the UN Security Council 1267 sanctions committee,” said the joint statement issued after the meeting between the PMs.
The two sides will encourage relevant institutions to hold regu- lar consultations on security and defence cooperation to promote contact between defence industries, modernise military equipment, and address outstanding issues, said the action plan for implementation of the strategic partnership. “Close cooperation in the field of defence is a symbol of our deep mutual trust. Mutual cooperation in this area will be strengthened,’’ said Modi, who also thanked Poland for facilitating the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine after the war broke out.

According to the action plan, the two sides will maintain regular contacts between foreign ministers, and they will use both bilateral and multilateral fora for these interactions. “Both sides will consider supporting each other's aspirations on a case-by-case basis to contribute to multilateral cooperation in the spirit of the United Nations Charter,” it said.

The leaders also reinforced their commitment to a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific in accordance with the international law of the sea as reflected in UNCLOS and with full respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and freedom of navigation “to the benefit of the maritime security and international peace and stability”.
