The Brahmans found in the Hyderabad Territory are divided into three great classes — the Maharashtra or Maratha, Carnatic or Kanaddi, and Andhra or Telugu, according to their locality. The Mahaj;ashtra Brahmans rank among the Ranch Dravida and derive their name from Maharashtra, a tract of country comprising portions of the Bombay Presidency, The Nizam's Dominions and Berar. They have several endogamous divisions, each of which is sub-divided into a large number of exogamous groups of an eponymous type, the eponym being a Vedic saint or Rishi. The main divisions of the Maratha Brahmans residing in the Nizam's Dominions are the Kokanastha, Deshastha and Karhada.
