Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party made a clean sweep of civic elections in Andhra Pradesh, winning all 11 municipal corporations and 73 of the 75 municipalities to which polls were held on March 10, reports Samdani MN.
“People have overwhelmingly backed our CM Jagan Reddy’s three capital cities theory,” said YSRCP spokesperson Ambati Rambabu.
The opposition TDP bagged two civic bodies — Tadipatri and Mydukur. The result of elections to the Eluru Municipal Corporation was withheld in view of a stay by the Andhra Pradesh high court.
YSRCP likely to control all civic bodies in Andhra
The HC is hearing a case related to the process of updating voters’ list.
Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM, which contested polls for the first time in AP, won just one municipal ward in Hindupur.
Jaganmohan Reddy’s victory in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Guntur is being seen as a big setback for TDP. N Chandrababu Naidu’s party didn’t reach double digits in many towns. Although TDP won with a majority in Tadipatri and Mydukur, YSRCP is likely to bag the chairperson’s posts there with the help of ex-officio votes. This means that YSRCP will control all civic bodies in the state. The Janasena-BJP combine, too, came a cropper. YSRCP’s victory in the municipal polls is even better than its performance in the assembly elections almost two years ago and panchayat polls last month.
