Nov 2015: ODI retirement

The Times of India, Nov 12 2015

Amidst rumours of rift in team, Younis announces shock ODI retirement

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan's sudden announcement to retire from ODIs in Nov 2015 fuelled speculation that he was not happy with the team management. The outspoken former captain told a foreign-based channel that he had been thinking about retiring from One-day cricket since 2011 due various cricketing and non-cricketing reasons. “I had thought that I would retire from ODIs after one good series but unfortunately the time didn't come since I was shunted in and out of the ODI team,“ he said. Younis also stated candidly that they were some people who didn't like his smile and some who didn't like his technique. “But despite everything I have always giv en importance to my country and even after retirement I don't want to be remembered for the number of runs or records I have broken. I want to be remembered as a true Pakistani and a team man,“ Younis said. “As a batsman I played a positive role in the team's wins in one-day cricket and now I realise that it's time to keep myself away from limited overs cricket,“ he said. Younis also said that some of his team mates had already got hints about his decision to retire from ODIs after the first match against England. The veteran is no stranger to controversy and has announced retirements in the past only to change his mind soon.

Former captain Javed Miandad also expressed anger at the way Younis was put in a corner and forced to take re irement from ODIs. “Younis has been a great servant of Pakis an cricket and he has achieved a lot but the circumstances in which he has announced his retirement today is a bad reflection on Pakistan cricket affairs,“ Miandad said.

Shahryar upset:

PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan has expressed disappointment at the decision of senior batsman Younis Khan announcing his retirement from ODIs. He said it was disappointing that Younis had decided to call it a day from ODIs although he was selected for the entire four-match series against England. “Younis has been doing well and that is why the selectors felt he should be played again in the ODI matches. For me it is surpris ng he announced his retirement today ,“ he said.
