2020: Col. Sarfraz Singh

Sansarpur village in Punjab’s Jalandhar district — the cradle of hockey that has produced a record 14 Olympians — now has another, rather unusual, record to its credit. It will be the first time that a native of the village will be given the highest honour for adventure sports.

Colonel Sarfraz Singh has been selected for this year’s Tenzing Norgay Award, the highest honour for adventure sports in India. As the list of awardees was announced, he was leading an expedition to Kangto, a 7,060-metre peak close to the China border in Arunachal Pradesh. He is with the elite Para Regiment of the Indian Army.

An adventure sports lover, Col Sarfraz is a skydiver, a combat free-faller and certified scuba rescue diver besides being an avid mountaineer. He has the distinction of climbing the highest peaks of four continents — Mt Everest (Asia), Mt Aconcagua (South America), Mt Elbrus (Europe) and Mt Kilimanjaro (Africa).

He is the son of hockey Olympian (retired) Col Balbir Singh who was a member of the Indian hockey team that won a bronze medal in Mexico Olympics (1968), a gold medal in Bangkok Asian Games (1966) and is an Arjuna Award recipient.
