A chance meeting nine years ago brought India’s Divij Sharan and Briton Samantha Murray together. Their doubles partners of the time introduced the pair, who seven years later, went on to become life-partners. They took another gamble, this time at Wimbledon, where they got in as alternates in the mixed-doubles draw.

The Sharans – Divij and Samantha – are the first married couple to play the Wimbledon mixed doubles in 30 years.

Robert McNicol, the Wimbledon Librarian, confirmed that wildcards Robert Seguso and Carling Bassett-Seguso in 1991, were the last. Prior to that, in the 1968 Championships, 13 married couples featured in the field. Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert competed together in 1974 when the pair was engaged. Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Czech Iveta Benesova, who won the title in 2011, married 12 months later.

Late on Friday, the Indo-British pairing, combined on a match court for the first time and put out Ariel Behar and Galina Voskpboeva 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

The duo had thrown their hat into the ring seven years ago for the first time. It was shortly after they had started dating, they didn’t make the cut.

The 35-year-old Indian — with a doubles ranking of 76, who has played the mixed event with other partners — upped the ante on couple goals, when he said the pair would play together going forward.

Sharan said. “We’ll stick with each other and give it a try. It was obviously really special for me to share the court with Sam. It is the first win for Sam at a Grand Slam as well so it is extra special. We’ll try to play whenever we get the chance.”

The couple first crossed paths in 2012. Murray Sharan, 33, from Stockport in Manchester, said, “I ended up on my own at a tournament where he was playing, so I ended up practising with him and his group the week before.”

The pair exchanged wedding vows in 2019 in a ceremony in Manchester, which was followed by the big, fat Indian affair in New Delhi.
