Omid, the last western Siberian crane, kept returning to Iran for 15 years after its mate Arezoo died. But this migratory season, birders have not spotted it so far
Like clockwork, Omid would appear at its wintering grounds in the Caspian lowlands of northern Iran every year around the first week of November. With time, it became a much-celebrated event in Iran, with newspapers carrying reports of the arrival.
For 15 years, this male Siberian crane made the 5,000km-long perilous flight from western Siberia to Iran ahead of winter, and back to Siberia in the spring, without fail.
