New Delhi: Giving relief to thousands of Class X students from the ICSE board and bringing them on a par with state board pupils, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Maharashtra Senior Secondary Board to extend the ‘best five’ option to ICSE passouts.

However, in an important clarification, a bench comprising Justices V S Sirpurkar and Cyriac Joseph said that the ‘best five’ option for ICSE students would be worked out from the first two groups — four subjects from group I and two from group II — and their marks in the lone group III subject would not be taken into account for admissions to staterun junior colleges.

“If the ICSE student feels that he should get the advantage of the marks in the group III subject too, then his average would be calculated on the basis of marks obtained in all seven subjects in Class X,” the bench said. In ICSE, group I includes four compulsory subjects — English, second language, social studies and environmental education. From a host of subject options in Group II and III, a student has to choose two from the second and one from the third.

The state board has six compulsory subjects for Class X students — English and two languages, social studies, mathematics and science. On February 25, it had brought in the best-of-five option for its students to allow them to compete on a level playing field with students from CBSE and ICSE.
