THE IMPERIAL GAZETTEER OF INDIA , 1908.

OXFORD, AT THE CLARENDON PRESS.

Note: National, provincial and district boundaries have changed considerably since 1908. Typically, old states, ‘divisions’ and districts have been broken into smaller units, and many tahsils upgraded to districts. Some units have since been renamed. Therefore, this article is being posted mainly for its historical value.

Bekal

Village in the Kasaragod taluk of South Kanara District, Madras, situated in 12 degree 24' N. and 75° 3' E. It has a fine fort on a headland facing the sea, which was built by Sivappa Naik of Bednur about the middle of the seventeenth century. The defences are said to show traces of European science. The surrounding tract is really part of the Malayalam country, and was at one time subject to the Chirakkal Rajas. Bekal formerly gave its name to the present taluk of Kasaragod, but it is now of no importance.
