Actors with criminal charges slapped against them seem to be a new trend in Bollywood. Right from the biggies like Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan to the likes of Shiney Ahuja, in most cases these actors have deserved to be charged. With baffling charges like rape, poaching and the illegal possession of arms, these actors have defied the laws and many are still awaiting a verdict.

Sanjay Dutt has been the topic of discussion ever since the Supreme Court sentenced the actor to serve a jail term of five years. The actor was involved in the illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and an AK-56 assault rifle during 1993. Dutt was booked under TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act) and had already served 18 months in jail. Although he was acquitted under the TADA offences, he was booked for illegal possession of arms. The actor is said to have hidden arms and grenades on the behest of Abu Salem, a member of Dawood Ibrahim, in 1993. In the next one month, Dutt will have to surrender and this decision by the Supreme Court has sent Bollywood into a tizzy.

From the lover boy to the bad boy, Salman Khan is controversies’ favourite child. During the shooting of Hum Saath Saath Hain in Jodhpur, Khan along with co actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu were accused of killing two endangered chinkaras and two black bucks way back in 1998. Although Khan missed his court hearing in Jodhpur after excusing himself, he will be summoned for the next hearing on April 27, 2013. Salman is also facing charges for killing a 28 year old man and injuring others during a hit and run case. Salman is said to have been under the influence of alcohol. Talk about Being Human!

Saif is one of the co accused along with Salman Khan in the black buck poaching case. Saif along with his Hum Sath Sath Hain co actors has been booked for shooting the protected animal in a village close to Jodhpur. The hearing is still on and a verdict remains to be given to the actors. Shiney Ahuja appalled the entire nation when he raped his20 year old domestic help in 2009. Shiney had also been accused of molesting her a day prior to the rape. But the actor who initially denied these claims, finally confessed to his heinous crime. As per medical reports, there were injuries on the maid’s private parts. Although Shiney is out on bail, his hearing will decide his fate. As of now, the actor has not been allowed to stay in Mumbai and continues to be unemployed.

What came as a surprise was actor John Abraham being booked and imprisoned for rash driving. In an incident that took place in 2006, the actor was taken into custody after a case was filed against him for rash and negligent driving. The actor however got out on bail. Unusual for someone as careful as Abraham!

More than the badshah of Bollywood, SRK seems to be the badshah of controversies which seem endless. Last year in 2012, Shahrukh Khan had a tiff with the Maharashtra Cricket Association officials where SRK accused them of manhandling his children. The MCA officials on the other hand accused Khan of engaging in a drunken brawl with them. Shahrukh’s kids Suhana and Aryan were present at the stadium to watch an IPL match between their dad’s team Kolkota Knight Riders and the Mumbai Indians. After KKR won, everyone was ecstatic. But the thrill of victory soon turned into a nightmare when SRK got into a fight with the officials. SRK has been banned from the stadium for 5 years.

Bollywood director Madhur Bhandarkar, who is known for his realistic films, was accused by wanna be starlet Preeti Jain for raping her. Preeti had tried her hand at Bollywood, namely in a film titled Bikaao-On Sale before she met Bhandarkar. The actress accused him of raping her 16 times on the pretext of promising her a film. But all these charges were squashed and after nine years of struggle, Bhandarkar breathed a sigh of relief as the court set him free.

Monica Bedi was romantically involved with dreaded underworld don Abu Salem who was wanted for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. Bedi was arrested along with her boyfriend when the two tried to enter Portugal with forged documents. After serving her jail term there, Bedi along with Salem was deported to India in 2005. While Bedi was accused under several charges, her jail term was reduced as she had served term in Portugal. While Salem continues to be in jail, Bedi is a free woman today!

Govinda was charged for slapping a visitor Santosh Rai while the latter was visiting the actor’s set in 2008 while he was shooting for Money Hai to Honey Hai. Govinda was angry when Rai misbehaved with artistes on sets and the women present there. Rai filed a case against the actor and he was booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including Section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (Punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation). Govinda has not pleaded guilty and it remains to be seen if the proceedings turn out in favour of the actor.

While Salman Khan remained absent from the Jodhpur courts in the black buck hearing case, his Hum Saath Saath Hain co-star Tabu could not avoid it. Tabu has been accused alogn with Sonali Bendre, Neelam, Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan for killing two black bucks in 1998 in a village near Jodhpur. Alogn with the others, Tabu has been booked under sections 9/51 and 9/52 of the Wildlife protection Act and 149 of IPC. They will be summoned once again for the next hearing on April 27.
