Sophia Manda Sangma is…
Sophia Manda Sangma is an Indian fashion designer.
Her styles are inspired by her roots in the aesthetics of the hilly regions of North-East, India, especially her native Meghalaya. She describes herself as a girl who loves to adorn herself and is proud to be a part of Matrilineal [Khasi] Society.
Sangma graduated from the Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi. She worked with Fashion Designer, Nitin Bal Chauhan before launching her own label.
Sophia M. Sangma is that Ready-To-Wear clothing label which was launched in 2010 by the eponymous Sophia Sangma
2013
With the objective of promoting the local weavers from the state of Meghalaya, India, Sangma created this collection for RTW, Spring/Summer 2013 Sophia Manda Sangma Spring/Summer 2013 as being about a woman who is a peron of cultivated beauty: vibrant, elegant and confident. Created with much respect for the colour, practised by the weavers of the [North Eatsren] region, the collection consisted of silk chiffons and duchesse silk fabrics incorporated with hand-woven floral motives of cotton-blends complete the whole collection. Besides, there were metal, painstakingly hand-done.
2014-15
Sophia Manda Sangma’s A/W14-15 has blends of soft and sturdy jackets, panelized, and predominantly asymmetrical silhouettes. The collection drew 1980’s ideas but transformed the workmanship into 21st century state of art. Sangma paid homage to ‘the rich ethnicity and cultures of India from which these hand embroidered flowers and ferns got sewn onto the garments. With many lines in parallels, in curves, connecting each other with different fabrics, they brought us with unique understated expressions. It was simply worth the time when done.’
Sangma says that her ‘inspirational Autumn/Winter 2014-2015 [consists] of drop shoulder jackets, some in a soft embroidered jacket, cropped leather jackets highlighting in glossy patent, leather trench coat, beautifully embroidered dresses and skirts some with see-through panels, tights and corsets.’
