Madan Mitra’s arrest

The Times of India

Rakhi Chakrabarty, December 13, 2014

Madan Mitra's arrest has lit the spark on a political powder keg. Trinamool and CPM will hit the streets almost simultaneously, throwing up a nightmare scenario for police and commuters. While Mamata Banerjee has resorted to her favourite tactic -rallies -to protest against BJP “vindictiveness“, CPM has smelt blood in Mitra's arrest and is going for the jugular demanding Mamata's arrest.

The Trinamool boss chose aggression as best defence and dared the PM to arrest her. “The BJP cadre and Centre are crossing all limits,” she said at the secretariat. “Trinamool will hit the streets from tomorrow. A new battle has begun. BJP will bite dust.BJP raised the Bhaag Mamata Bhaag slogan. Should we say Bhaag BJP Bhaag from India?” Trinamool is desperate to salvage political capital ahead of the 2105 Kolkata civic polls and the 2016 assembly polls. “It is an uphill battle of perception man agement for a party that boasted of its clean image,” an observer said.

With the ruling party cornered, the opposition has smelt an opportunity to extract mileage ahead of the civic polls. Highprofile arrests in the Saradha scam have breathed life into the lacklustre CPM. Around 2.30pm on Saturday -when Trinamool marchers are still likely to be around -CPM members will march through central Kolkata, demanding Mamata's arrest.
