Second in command (Crpf's 7th Battalion)

Hira Kumar Jha has been conferred Shaurya Chakra (posthumous) for exemplary courage in neutralizing a senior level Maoist. On July 3, 2014, the senior Maoist commander Sidhu Koda fled with a hostage after an encounter with Jha's team in Lakhari village in Jamui, Bihar. Jha with two other officers laid a trap on the route Koda was to take for his escape. As Koda arrived, Jha's team realized it could not fire on the Maoist as he had a civilian humanshield. To ensure the Maoist let go of the villager, Jha exposed himself and challenged Koda. As Koda aimed to fire at Jha, his fellow officers gunned the Maoist down. But not before Koda had fired a shot that went through the officer's skull.
