Writing with equal ease about the environment as he does about the history of Indian cricket and democracy, Ramachandra Guha has emerged as one of the most influential voices in the role of the humanities in education in recent years.
As a petitioner in various public causes, the most recent being the one against the Salwa Judum in Chhattisgarh, Guha has never shied away from facing controversy in the eye. His lectures in recent years have focused on areas such as “why India cannot be a superpower” and the environment, provoking not just university students but the government as well.
Listed at 44 among the 100 most influential intellectuals worldwide by the Foreign Policy magazine, Guha also made publishing history earlier when he clinched a landmark Rs 97-lakh deal with Penguin to write seven books.
