(Great Forest '). — Mountain in unadministered territory, bordering on the Hazara and Peshawar Districts of the North-West Frontier Province, at the eastern end of a spur of the Ham range. It is situated on the right bank of the Indus, and rises to a height of 7,400 feet above the sea. The southern side of the hill is thickly wooded and is inhabited by Gaduns ; the north side is peopled by the Amazai Pathans. For many years Mahaban had been identified with the site of Aornos, a strong fortress taken by Alexander. After visit- ing the place in 1904, Dr. .Stein pointed out that it differs completely from the description given of Aornos. (See paragraph on Archaeolog)- in Buner.)
