RIP Sridevi: Here are some unknown facts about the actress | Feb 25, 2018 | IndiaTimes/ The Times of India

With a record 11 Filmfare Award nominations and a commendable 5 wins is a feat every other Bollywood actress would envy. India’s first bona fide female superstar

Sridevi was born on 13th of August, 1963. She was named Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan on birth.

She was the first female actress in India to have bagged the 'superstar' tag.

Early career She started her career at the age of four in M.A. Thirumugham's devotional film Thunaivan. and continued to work in South-Indian films for several years as a child artist. She also acted as a child [teenage] artist in 1975's most talked about film 'Julie'. Sridevi was 13, when she played the role of Rajinikanth’s stepmother in a Tamil film called Moondru Mudichu (1976)

Before she marked her debut in Bollywood she did films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam industries. She made her Bollywood debut as a lead star with the film 'Solva Saavan' in 1978. Helmed by P. Bharathiraja, the movie starred Amol Palekar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda in pivotal roles along with Sridevi.

First major hit Her fourth film as a heroine Pathinaaru (16) Vayathinile (Solwa Sawan in Hindi-Urdu) (1977) was not only a major commercial and critical hit, it focussed totally on her, title onwards. The film was about the vulnerability of a 16-year-old women in love. That Pathinaaru Vayathinile enabled Sridevi to show off her soon-to-be-famous thunder thighs helped propel the film to nationwide success—and Sridevi to star status within a year of her debut as a leading lady.

With films like Himmatwala, Tohfa, Mr India, Chandni, Nagina, Sadma; Sridevi emerged as the top star in the country.

After her debut with 'Solva Sawan' in 1979 opposite Jeetendra, the duo was paired again in the 1983 film 'Himmatwala'. The film went on to become the blockbuster of the year. The song 'Naino Me Sapna' became the rage. Sridevi's bejewelled outfit in the song totally stole the show. The music was composed by disco king Bappi Lahiri. The actress starred in several films like 'Mawaali', 'Maqsad' and 'Justice Chaudhry' forming a popular onscreen pair with Jeetendra

Powerful comeback with 'English Vinglish'

After almost 15 years of hiatus, Sridevi was back to what she loves, doing films. As a middle-class wife in the film 'English Vinglish', Sridevi gave a brilliant performance. She was appreciated for the same from all quarters. She was even nominated for the Best Actress award at most of the award ceremonies, including the Filmfare awards, where she received her ninth nomination for Best Actress.

Helmed by Gauri Shinde, the story revolves around a housewife who joins an English speaking class to stop her husband and daughter mocking her lack of English skills.

Sridevi will be last seen doing a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film ZERO. The film will hit the screens on 21 December 2018.

Awards In 2013, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honor. She was also voted 'India's Greatest Actress in 100 Years' in a CNN-IBN national poll conducted in 2013 on the occasion of the Centenary of Indian Cinema. She has also won 5 Filmfare Awards for Best Actress in a leading role. Lamhe, Chalbaaz and Mr India were three of them, rest two were regional films.

Sridevi's first Filmfare award

Sridevi has received many awards in her career for her performances in a number of films. Sridevi won her first 'Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Tamil' for film 'Meendum Kokila' in the year 1982. And in 1984, she won her first Filmfare Best Actress award for her film 'Sadma' which starred Kamal Haasan as the male lead. Helmed by Balu Mahendra, the film is a remake of his own Tamil Film 'Moondram Pirai'. Sridevi won 5 Filmfare Awards for Best Actress in a leading role

Family Sridevi has two daughters named after two famous Bollywood characters - Jhanvi and Khushi. Sridevi lost her father during the shooting of Lamhe in London. She flew home to perform the last rituals and returned to work to shoot a comedy sequence with co-star Anupam Kher.

Films she could or did not do

Sridevi was the first choice for Indra Kumar's 'Beta'. She was to star opposite Anil Kapoor in the movie. But she had already done a number of films with Anil Kapoor and thus declined the offer. The role then went to Madhuri Dixit. The 'Dhak Dhak' song and her powerful role made Madhuri a superstar overnight.

Sridevi was director duo Abbas Mustan's first choice to play the female lead in their movie Baazigar. At that point of time, Seema and Priya were supposed to be twins. And Sridevi was supposed to play a double role (Seema and Priya) in the movie. But the directors felt that killing Sridevi would only make Shah Rukh emerge as a villain. They wanted the audience to sympathise with SRK's character and thus they had to bring relatively unknown actresses to play the part. Kajol and Shilpa Shetty eventually took up the role.

Sridevi made her Hindi-Urdu film debut as the heroine’s younger sister in Julie (1975)

Hindi and Sridevi When she made her debut in Bollywood, Sridevi was not comfortable talking in Hindi. Her voice was mostly dubbed by Naaz and Rekha had dubbed for her in Aakhiri Raasta. She dubbed her own dialogues for the first time in Chandni. While Rekha was the original choice for Chandni, Jaya Prada had intially been offered Nagina. Both the films added to Sridevi's versatality and helped her in growing a strong foothold in the industry.

International offer Sridevi was also considered for a role in Jurassic Park. Steven Spielberg wanted to cast Sridevi for a brief role. But she was at the peak of her career in Bollywood then and rejected the offer. Taking up a Hollywood project would have meant a long break from Bollywood and she was not ready to lose out on her Bollywood projects because of this.

Jaya Prada was considered Sridevi's strongest contender at that point of time. Their fierce competition was one of the worst kept secrets ever. As per a report in IMDB, during the shoot of Maqsad both the actresses would never see eye to eye. Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra then had to lock the two actresses in a room hoping this would break the ice. But when the door was opened after two hours, they both were sitting in two corners silently.

Jeetendra and Sridevi emerged as the most popular couple of their times. The duo was paired romantically opposite each other in 16 films, out of which 11 films were superhit. Films like Himmatwala, Ghar Sansaar, Tohfa, Mawwali established them as the most bankable couple of the decade. Sridevi was also the highest paid Hindi actress from 1985-1992.

Sridevi during her superstar phase: Lamhe (1991)

Love life During the 80s, Sridevi was allegedly dating Disco King Mithun Chakraborty. The two were also rumoured to have secretly tied the knot in a temple. As per a report in Daily Bhaskar, the actress was not aware of Mithun's marital status and when she realised that he was not going to end his marriage with Yogita Bali, she walked out of his life. Yogita Bali is said to have tried commiting suicide after she got to know of this episode. Sridevi and Mithun never spoke about any of this in open.

It was during this period that Sridevi's affair with Boney Kapoor started making news. Sridevi carried her broken heart to the Kapoors who in turn offered her to stay with them. While nursing her broken heart Sridevi fell in love with Boney Kapoor. But Arjun Kapoor's mother Mona had no clue of what was going on in her house. In an interiew with DNA, Mona Kapoor said, "There was nothing left in the relationship to give it a chance because Sridevi was already with a child. Their rishta was kayam".

When Sridevi was suffering from fever while shooting a song

Sridevi was passionate about her profession and hence she used to put all efforts in while she was working on a film. While shooting one of the most loved songs of the actress, the rain song 'Na Jane Kaha Se Aayi Hai' from the film 'ChaalBaaz' she was suffering from high fever. Reportedly, she had a fever of 103 degrees, however, she still completed the shoot.

The film is the remake of 1973 Indian movie 'Seeta Aur Geeta' starring Sridevi in a double role. The film also starred Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth in pivotal roles.

Final controversy around Bahubali

Sridevi was reportedly offered the role that Ramyakrishna played in Bahubali, directed by SS Rajamouli. There were reports that she sought Rs 10 crore, 10 flight tickets and booking of an entire floor in a five-star hotel. But last year, Sridevi, while speaking in Hyderabad, said, “I was shocked when I saw Rajamouli on TV saying that I had made many unreasonable demands to act in ‘Bahubali’. If that was the kind of actress I was, I would not have acted in more than 300 films in many languages throughout my film career.” Sridevi did 83 Telugu movies. The only thing that would put off the film reporters was her answer to every question. “Amma nu adagandi” (Ask my mother). TNN

‘Sri coaxed Yash Chopra to sign me for Chandni’

By Saroj Khan

One afternoon, I received a call from a cameraman asking me to go and watch Sridevi in Himmatwala that had just released. I went with my daughter Cuckoo and watched in awe. I told my daughter I wish I could get to work with a dancer like her. That evening, I got a call from Subhash Ghai, saying he wanted me to choreograph Sri for Karma. The phone almost fell out of my hand.

On our first day, I asked Subhashji if we should do a rehearsal and he felt it wasn’t necessary as Sri was a good dancer. The song was ‘Maine rab se tujhe’ and the first shot took 13 takes. Afterwards, Sri told me: ‘I’m a bad dancer. Please don’t give me such hard steps without rehearsal.’ I liked her honesty and willingness to learn. We became friends and made rehearsals a mandate. Before we shot Hawa Hawai, we didn’t find a place to rehearse. So we went to Mehboob Studios and rehearsed in an open corridor outside the make-up room.

In every film, in every photograph, Sri’s look, her expression is different. She was always experimenting. It was her idea to sport a curly haired look for Hawa Hawai. The first time I worked in a Yash Chopra film was when Sri coaxed him into taking me on as the choreographer on Chandni. Sri was trained in Bharatnatyam and used to a particular style of dancing in the initial years. It was during the shoot for Mitwa in Chandni that she started working on softer movements.

The song ‘Kaate nahi kat-te’ needed passion. We told her a sari fluttering in breeze and clinging to her in the rain would make her sensuous. Also we decided against the usual black and white and opted for a Feroza blue. She told me, ‘I trust you Masterji’ and did as told. (As told to Mohua Das)

The empress of the 1980s

The Times of India

Sridevi, whose irresistible cocktail of indigenous oomph and gift for connecting with the audience filled up cavernous single-screens and took her to the pinnacle of popularity in the Hindi, Telugu and Tamil film industries, died in Dubai on the night of 24 Feb 2018. She was 54, reports said.

Pure gold at the box office, Sridevi could also turn out sensitive performances – Moondrum Pirai (Sadma in Hindi), Lamhe and, more lately, English Vinglish to name just three – with equal felicity and feel.

During her pomp in the 1980s, Sridevi was often the film’s real hero. At a time when action was king and brawny men lorded over the box-office, scripts revolved around her. Chaalbaaz (1989), a Seeta aur Geeta reprise, had both biggies Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth playing second fiddle to her. Mr India (1987) might as well have been titled Miss India. And over 30 years since its release her snake dance in the blockbuster Nagina (1986) continues to be imitated by drunken men at weddings.

The Sridevi phenomenon in Hindi films started with Himmatwala in 1983. But the Sivakasi-born’s career had begun over a decade and half earlier. She worked as a child artiste with thespians such as Sivaji Ganesan (Kandan Karunai, 1967) and MGR (Nam Naadu) in Tamil films. And aging Hindi film lovers will remember her as the young girl jiving to the track, My heart is beating, in Julie (1975).

Her lead debut feature in Hindi, Solva Savan was a remake of her Tamil hit, 16 Vayathinile (At 16), a rare film also starring fellow legends Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth. Director Bharathi Rajaa’s venture vanished like smoke in wind, setting her Bollywood career back. And that’s despite a much-discussed scene where the teenage heroine is baited unsuccessfully to wade through water without getting her dress wet.

Then Himmatwala, with Jeetendra in the male lead, happened. An essay in imbecility that has since acquired iconic status, director K Raghavendra Rao’s starrer hit the bull’s eye. So did Sridevi. Her rise and shine was part of a great Southern wave that hit Bollywood in the late-1970s and early 1980s. Jaya Prada (Sargam, 1979), Kamal Haasan (Ek Duje Ke Liye, 1981) and Rajinikanth (Andha Kanoon, 1983) all found fertile fresh ground but none reached the skyscraper heights like Sridevi in Bombay.

Sridevi in Lamhe (1991)

Directors such as K Raghavendra Rao (Himmatwala, Tohfa) and K Bapaiah (Mawali, Maqsad) played key roles at this juncture of her career. These movies were aimed to please the frontbenchers at a time when the gentry was being lured away from the theatres by the new techno-toy: the video cassette player. The thoughtful Sadma, released the same year, sank without a trace.

But with the passage of time and growth of her own box-office clout, Sridevi started demanding and getting stronger roles – Chaalbaaz and Nagina – to name two. Later she is even said to have refused an inadequate part in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.

When Bollywood A listers Shekhar Kapur (Mr India) and Yash Chopra (Chandni and Lamhe) cast her, it meant her conquest of Bollywood was complete. Sridevi became the chiffon in Chopra’s Switzerland. In both Chandni and Lamhe, Sridevi displayed a more expressive and less flamboyant side to her film persona as evident in some of her Tamil and Telugu movies such as the award-winning Meendum Kokila (1982).

At the core of Sridevi’s prowess was a staggering range of natural attributes. Her elfin smile could light up a pinball machine. And her eyes could multi-task. They could convey anger (Army, Sherni) or hesitant love (Lamhe, 1991). For her, acting seemed to be like a switch which could be turned on or off at a moment’s notice. She could play a woman interrupted (Sadma) and be both whipsmart assertive or silently submissive in the same film (Chaalbaaz). And she was a rare heroine with an incredible sense of comic timing. Exhibit 1: Her Chaplin act in Mr India.

Sridevi in the cult favourite but commercially unsuccessful Lamhe (1991)

Few heroines could transmit the joy and abandon of dancing like her. Be it the desi Gori tere ang ang mein (Tohfa) or the western Hawa hawai (Mr India), Sridevi brought a bounce and spontaneity to her showstopper moves. That Gori tere ang ang mein, a song where Jeetendra and Sridevi run around a thousand copper vessels has 40 million YouTube views, only shows her brand of sensuality continues to enamor in the size-zero age.

After her marriage in 1996 to Boney Kapoor, who had produced her super hit Mr India as well as the super flop Roop Ki Rani, Choron ka Raja (1993), she exited the film scene only to return after a hiatus. English Vinglish (2012), which also became a hit in Hong Kong and England, showed her further ripening as an artiste.

Sridevi was in Dubai for a family wedding, and had stayed back after the ceremonies. Her husband had flown back to Mumbai with their younger daughter Khushi, but he had returned to Dubai to surprise her, according to Khaleej Times.

He was reportedly in the room when Sridevi went to the bathroom to get ready for a dinner, according to Khaleej Times. It said Kapoor discovered her unconscious in the bathtub filled with water. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Police officials at Anil Kapoor's house said as many as 150 people from Karnataka came to pay homage to Sridevi, while another group from Telangana gathered outside the actor's Lokhandwala residence. Fans from Rajasthan and other parts of India had also arrived.
